THE HERALD. I)'\vnik it Nkill. Publishers |2 A Year tM Advaace. I'.ro Stc.ne City, Dakota. FRIDAY, JULY 1. 1887. Worthless dogs are terrorizing the women of Wahpeton, several oi tne 1 itter having been severly bitten. Another editor lias struck it rich. 1rvino Hath of Sioux Falls has been appointed a government post office in jector at a salary of S3,000. When honest officials are wanted the place k'(,t them is in the editorial ranks. Our visit to Milbank Wednesday demonstrated very clearly to our mind that the crops around Big Stone City are very much better than in the large central portion of the county. As one nears Milbank Iroiu the east it is easily discernable that crops are poorer, and that the drouth has done its work. North of Milbank, and southwest of that city the crops are almost a total failure, and on the av *jrage the whole county will scarcely go eight bushels an acre, not half a nop. There is no fiction about this. Much as we dislike to tell it, the truth has to come out some time and better iiow than later. Even what remains has to run the gauntlet yet before liar est. __________________ «J. V. S. S. A. At a meeting of the executive com mittee of the Grant County Sunday M-hool association held in Milbank on the 29th inst.. the following vice pres idents were ehoseu for the respective townships: Adams—Mrs ft E Jones, Revillo. Holqvist, Jr, Mil bank. It was decided to hold the next an nual convention at Milbank, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15 and Irt, lh87. It was also the sense of the meeting that local conventions be held in dif ferent parts of the county, before the unual convention. This aaine congress, however, pas* sed a law prohibiting special legisla tion in the territories, which is con sidered even by the people of Dakota, to be a good law. Aberdeen wants the county seat of Brown county and got a bill passed at the last legislature authorizing a special election for that county on the question, July 12th. Should the vote prevail in favor of Aberdeen, Columbia threatens to test lie issue in courts as a violation of the law of Congress prohibiting special legislation. At this the Xews raises a doleful howl, chargiug the Columbi ans with tr\ing to thwart the wishes ol the people through an arbitrary act ot congress, and claiming that the people have the sole right to sav where and' of what form their local govern ment shall be. On the statehood question the Aber deen News has evev h:ul the one idea i hat division on the Missouri river and tho capital at Aberdeen were the '.nly ..conditions on which congress should or could admit Dakota into the Union. It did not object so strongly to admission as a whole, as that still left a hope of the capital. Hut when ever the people made any movement lor self government and by a very large majority of those affected by the movement voted to adopt a constitu tion and divide on the 4t3th parallel, the Xews at once endorsed the posi tion of partisan Democratic con less which denied to a people the right «f choice in their own affairs and claiming that congress was all powerful and that the people had no rights that congress was bound to re spect. Here are deep green woods, in whose coolness are ferny pool?, moss and lichen-covered stones and logs, among which sweet wood violets hide and bright blossomed columbine hangs its starry bells to lure busy bees and idle butterflys to their fairy sweetness. There is the silvery splash of running water where springs flow out of their pebbly bed, cold from the stony heart of the hills, all pure, fresh and reviving, and many of them of highly mineral and medicinal virtues. After a few hours of boat riding and tishing on this lovely sheet of water one is inclined to direct emory to the easily recalled visions of lodges, wigwams, camp-fires, ar rows. dark-eyed squaws and dusky braves until suddenly recalled by a sharp pull at the line, and then with a well assumed science and carefully drawn in line is landed a^s beautiful a black bass as ever delighted the heart of that venerable angler Izaak Wal ton. One reluctantly looks back over the suntipped water with a gleaming white sail in the distance, the angle of a beautiful island, the running swallows, dsrting and dripping with unwearied wings. With an envious glance, where the blue sky is clpft bv the grey and white of the gulls as shrilly screaming they soar away to their nests in the rocks, we turn back feeling that to so fair a scene, "part ing is such sweet sorrow." lexican N I O •—n*"VVKr^.Vinc""r« Af wnt.-r f-ov\ O r.U Direct from us.
