W. C. T. li. Department. "For Ood and Home and Native L- u»t." Mns. M. W. LYON.Editor. There is nothing in the present •condition of things, which is more (thoroughly dt prt*ssiug to the heait of •the true sympathiser with the vital •reform questions the tiiues, than the dose study of the course pursued by the great rialies of our country. Jt is said that 'corporations have •no BOUIS." Truly if our Lndividua, souls were to be fitted CM The Voice. future «tate, by tlte education receipt U in the reading of the average daily p®* •per, it might he hard to decide who .should te "first the kingdom of Heaven for the best work. ®f the best people is so belittled, and the "conspiracy of silence" is so determ ined, on all the more important .questions, that w« are constrained to cry out "Lord 1HW long may Ood cause the wrath man to praise him." The crafty plot to organize Oklaho ma with a license law., noticed in this column last week, failed by a vote of 104 to 134. 'lhe present urohiUtory law was .retained in force until the meeting of the territorial legislature An attempt is being made to make capital for high license against prohi bition on account of the recent de creased arrests in this city. An ex amination, however, will disclose the fact that the decrease of arrests in Oinaha is not due at all to high license but to the enforcing of the prohibi tion against Sunday sales, which un til the recent agitation for a proliibi tory amendment has been a dead letter. On page six of the last annual .message of Mayor W. .T. iiroach. who Issued the order requiring the saloons to comply with the Sunday prohibi tion feature, is disclosed the secret .of decreased arrests. The message says: "A careful comparison of the number of arrests made on Sundays for drunkenness for the time since the .order went into effect (March 17, J889.) with the corresponding period of last year discloses the fact that the numlwr of arrests are a fraction over sixiy per cent, less with the closed saloon on Sunday." If prohi bition for one seventh of the time is such a success in Omaha, there seems to be no good reason why it should not be made a permanent feature.— NEBRASKA'S I-KRIL. Nebraska is the historic high license state, the first in the TTnion to adopt the system, which it did iu 1881. Earnest temperance men like John H. Finch supported it asatenip eranee measure. lint their experi ence of the system in actual trial bitterly dissapointed them. The best people of the state are now thoiough iy disgusted andaiic med at the spread of intemperance and thp power of the saloon. The great religious assemb lies in 1888 spoke as follows: Presbyterian Synod of Nebraska: Resolved, That the high license ayatem of Nebraskaia an utter failure in reducing the evitla of the liquor traffic. The Nebraska Ba|)Ust Convention Bevolved, That w« condemn the high license system of Nebraska as morally wrong and a compromise with the powers of darkness, under which the liquor traffic has been greatly fostered and developed. The North Nebraska Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church: Resolved, that we hereby brand the license system, high or low, as satamc In nature and daroaable in practice. Yet with such a verdict of the best people of the state, there is now pend ing in Nebraska.alongside the prohib itory amendment, a license amend ment, to fasten the evil system upon the state by organi£ law for all com ing time. Tbe effect will be that every honest man who is elected to the legislature or to a municipal council, will be compelled by his oath to support the constitution, to sustain in aome way the license system. Even local option in the strongest temperance towships of the state will become impossible. The liquor traffic will close its iron hand on the throat of Netraa)u. The temperance men of America should rally to save Nebraska. Her own forces cannot do it, tor'she has the national rum power silently con centrating its vast enginery upon her territory. Their money is wait ing by the million for every form of corruption fund. It will take the vhole temperance force of the nation to defeat them, and there is not a moment to lose, i'rav for it, all who pray! Work and give for it. all who can! Money to till the state with temperance literature, and to send there the most convincing speakers is imperatively needed. Two persons offer to be two of a thousand to give 8100 each to make up $100,000 for this purpose. Why should it not be donef—The Better Day.
