Pa.) has introduced a resoliui.vi in the house calling for information from the post master general as to Mie authority un der which the work of printing postage stamps was given to the bu/'au of engraving and printing after bids had been called for and had been received for performing the work. Lynchburg, Vs., March 3.—Geo. Jubal A. Early died last night at 10:30 o'clock. He passed away quietly in the presence of his family and physician, his kindred and several intimate friends. The old general seemed awi-re of his approaching end tarly in the day. Before noon hu callcd for the inoiniug papers, as was his invariable custom, and attempted to read, but found that his sight was fail ing. Soon after he extended his hand to Senator Daniel and calmly said: "I want to tell you good by, major." He then told his nephew, Caboll Early, fare well, after whieh he dropped into a quiet slumber. Later in the day the dy ing veteran asked Senator Daniel not to leave the room as he wanted to talk with hiiu about certain arrangements but from that time he suffered such intense pain that he did not revive the subject. He met death unflinchingly with his hand resting quietly in Senator Daniel's. Jubal Anderson Early, who was in his seventy-eighth year, was a Virginian by birth. He was graduated at the United States military academy in 1SJ.J7, ap pointed a lieutenant of artillery and as sigrcd to duty at Fort Monroe, Va. He saw service in the Florida war in lSoT-8, and in the latter year resigned from the army and began the practice of law in Virginia. During the war with Mexico Gen. The most successful cast ever made at the Eagle Iron company's furnace was made at 12 p. m. last night, when twenty tons grade No. 1 pif: iron was run into the moulds. Southampton, March 3.--The German steamer Seandla, Capt. Kopf, arrived here this moruing, returning with her shaft damaged. The Scandia sailed from Hamburg Feb. 25, hound for New York. At the beginning of the civil war he entered the Confederate service as a colonel, commanded a brig ade at Bull Run and in the battle of Williamsburg was badly wounded. He was then promoted to brigadier general. When in command of the forces in the Shenandoah valley in the fall (Jen. Early surprised the national forces at Cedar Creek in the absence of Gen. Sheridan, but the latter made his famous ride and reached his army in time to turn the defeat into victory. In March, 1805, Early was totally routed by Cus ter at WayneslK»ro, and a few days later was relieved by Gen. Lee from the com mand of the valley. Editor* In Convention. Charles City, Iowa.
