Hicks, the state reterinarian, was called to Mon te video last Monday to operate on a $2,000 horse. Lowthian has been suffering more or less with his stomach trouble during the week past, and has gone to Ackley, Minn., to visit-his son and re ceive treatment. J. D. Burkhardt returned the first of the week from a visit to his sisters and brothers in the Will Emanuel, the furniture man, left Wednesday for Chica go and Grand Rapids, Mich where he will make a selection of furniture goods right at the factories. He intends also to make a short visit at Augusta, Wis., and will also go to the Hoi -Springs, Ark. In the house, Rep. Stoddard was appointed to serve on bridg es and ferries, and upon that of telephone and telegraphs, and also on warehouses, grain and grain grading. Representative Weide was placed on military affairs, aud was made chairman of the committee on statistics. Flagman Wiseman did a little detective work last Friday when a telephone message came up| from Ortonville asking him to! arrest a man who was charged with the larceny of some {f) 00, and a description of the man was giveu him. After some little search Mr. Wiseman spotted his man and discovered that he was going east on a freight train, and without arresting him also boarded the same train, but before doing so telephoned to the Ortonville marshal to be at the Big Stone depot. When the train£rived«~BiK"stone lhe!!or officer on hand and Mr. Wiseman directed him to man, who was immediately placed under arrest. Mr Wise man says that in his younger days he never had any ambition to become a great sleuth, but he is now commencing to think that he missed bis calling. For Sal«. Mount, started cast yesterday morning on a visit to friends at Montevideo, and also at poin/ in Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Garvey, who had been visiting at the Garvey homestead in Vernon, started Tuesday on a trip to Wisconsin, ou a visit to Mrs Garvey's relatives before re turning to iheir home at Southard, N. D. Gary Interstate: Rolla G. Fink of Big Stone City, spent Saturday in Gary, and was a welcome caller at this office, Mr. Fink is the traveling repre sentative of the Avery Thresh ing Machine Company, with his headquarters at Aberdeen. Senator Amsden at the organ ization of the senate last week was placed on the following •committees: Chairman of en grossed and enrolled bills, also placed on the committees on drainage, irrigation, legislative expenses, and school and public lands. Mrs. Paul Kohler who had been visiting relatives in Wis consin, returned to Milbank this week. On next Tuesday, January 17, a representative of the Superior lodge will be the guest of the Milbank degree of honor, and will explaiu to the members the change in the law of relationship existing between the Degree of Honor and the A. We acknowldgean invitation to attend the opening of the now city hall at Big Stoue City, which took place last evening with an appropriate program of exer cises. We should have greatly enjoyed doing this, and had ful-i ly intended to do so but was de prived of the pleasure through circumstances over which we had no control As the first Mayor of Big Stone, we should have greatly enjoyed the privil ege of attending the opening, and exhibiting the warrant for our salary as mayor of the city, the first year of its organization' as a municipality, aud which our frugal wife has preserved dur ing these years, with the p^ssi biltty in sight that we may need I it in our declining life. The board of county com missioners have been in session since lie new year, aud on Tues day Messrs. Ericksou and Berk n^r, the retiring members.' 1 surrendered their seats to the uewlv elected commissioners, Messrs. George Mitchell and Chas. Linngren. Both Messrs. Erickson and Berkner retire from their official work alter faithful service and with the! (consciousness of having at all times worked for the best in i terests of the county. Mr. Maxwell who holds over, has had two years experience as commissioner, and is familiar with present conditions in the county offairs and Mr. George Mitchell was for many years chairman of the board, and is thoroughly posted on county matters. Edward Glomstad, who with his brother Anton, was at one time engaged in conducting a shoe store in Milbank, but who for a number of years past has been traveling for a Boston shoe firm, died at his home in Boston on December 5, having been stickeu down with pneampnia.
