"The Ohio Valley U tho temperate zone of the United States." One would have biip poeed Cincinnati wiw in a very intemjr ato zone. The editorial paragraphs in tho Cincin nati Commercial Gazette indicate that there ia something ntimulatin about the Tratera of the Ohio river, and that tho para'rapher has leu drinking some of it. A rem AKKAisLK coincidence is noted in tho Buffalo Express which says that TJlle. Mazint, the reat Parisian ballet dancer, hor daughter, Mile. Martini, and tho grand daughter, Mile. Carlini, are each twenty yi ars of age. The name of the man who sent Gov ernor Cleveland a dog having been tele graphed over the land by tho Associated I'rww, the Milwaukee Journal would like to know if it will antagonize Mr. Gould's interest to give us the name of the dog. . Some of our exchanges swallowed the etory of the death of Louis Kossuth as Jonah swallowed the whale, and devoted T?ho!b columns to biography and eulogy. A few years ago they were similarly a.l eorbed by the reported death of Marshal Bazaine. Out; merchants would declare that the weather was just comfortable if the ther mometer dropped forty degrees lower, and trade were to improve ls rapidly as it did during the last drop of forty de grees. Saturday was a lively day with those who advertise in The Teleukam. The Chicago Herald observes that a St. Louis newspaper has a long article on ears which is embellished by three cuts, one showing tho normal ear, another tho thief's ear, and another tho usurer's ear. Tho picture of tho St. Louis ear was omitted because the paper is not ready to enlarge. Hon. Sam. J. Han lull is getting very cordially abused these days by his fellow Democrats with whom he differs on the subject of protection, and who charge him with going South to disseminate the peed. of heresy. In a recent interview Mr. Bandall said: am going South in response to the cordial invitation of tho people, and more in a social way than otherwise- I do not hesitate to say that when I make speeches I shall express my well-known convictions as to tho tariff niul the abolition of the internal reveuue service, but ray remarks will relate chief ly to the industrial development of the South. While in New York the other day ho went down to Fort Hamilton ns the giict of Gen. Hancock. Iu exhibiting various implements and engines of war, CoL Spencer shot and broke four out of six balls that were thrown up. The royal Jap took the gun, fumbled it nver a little and asked to have a ball thrown up. The ball wa thrown up, The r. J. pointed the gun and pulled the trigger just in time t break the ball. Four more were thrown up. The General smashed them all. Then Mr. Hull, of the American rille team, bgnn tiring with a Spencer ritle fit some blocks et broadside. Then ho f t up another lot, putting -no of them with its narrow edg toward tie General. The latter took th.e nil winked, smiled and tired. The bWk tumbled down. In all probability no more hardened criminal exitts than this man II ass, and liaii Judge Fuller known of hhi threat to murder him before p&seintf sen tence, he would have made it twenty-tve years instead of twelve. After giving a brief history of th crime of Dan VunWageuer tho Kalamazoo Tele- tjraph tsays : The terrible crime, tlu? circumstnucet and the character cf Van Wagener, all marked him as a dangerous man to wockty. In the whole blrxiy affair, from it coin un? ion Ui termination, viewed in any light or from any standpoint, there was not and cannot b a mitigating circum-tHnce. It was a bratal, cool-headed and cold-blooded attempt to murder, and oue of the most dastardly that ha ever occurred in our elate, and should have placed the ierpetrator leyond tlie reach of executive clemency. And et , with these fact attainable and well known to most -ople, Governor Hegotecomniutes the sentence of the crim iual to expire January I, lN-s".. We denounce the net n a h 'ujh-handed outrwje, without thf haduu) of jrtiltintiivj circuniMtance. Here, where all the facts are known, it is re garded as a crime against society that should receive the severest censure of all the iople. There no safety to irson or property bo long a- executive clemency is extended to dejeradoe convictetl of the gravest crimes known to the law. Superintendent of Police Perry, of this city, is somewhat acquainted with Van Wagner, having had him for a time in his custody since hia attempt to murder Hewitt near Kalamazoo. Mr. Perry was Deputy Sheriff at the time, and drew from Van Wagner an interesting history of his earlier life, and, if the criminal's words are true, they show him to have been thoroughly schooled in tho ways of vice uml crime. Ho expressed to both Mr. Perry and ex-Warden Watkins, of the Ionia prison, the hardness and de pravity of his heart when ho said he would 'sacrifice the lives of four of his best friends to cover up his own evil deeds, or make good his escape after ar rest for evil-doing. Mr. Perry thinks the commutation of Van Wagner's sentence is an insult to courts, justice and the peo ple. Had tho tender-hearted and easily pursuaded old Governor a few months more in which to disgrace his office it would bo well for the State Law and Order League to see that he was speedily impeached. CURRENT COMMENT. New York Olmervcr: There should be no delay or dallying or temporizing with this Mormon abomination. Chicago Times : Mr. Holman is sug gested for a place in the Cleveland Ciibi net, but is too late to impart a boom to the declining liver-pad. Cincinnati Connncrtial-Gazette : Mar shal Lot Wright did his duty on election day in this city, October 14, his whole duty and no more than his duty. Detroit Times: It is reported that President Arthur will continuo to fill va cancies in office up to the end of his term. There is no good reason for doing other wise. Detroit Free Press : If President Ar thur has any more treaties in his coat-tail pocket ho might as well producethem at once. The country can standi a flood as well as a succession of showers. Detroit post: The attempt in the Sen ato to set on fxt an investigation to find out how the important features of the Spanish and Nicaraguan treaties were made public, wjis worse than foolish ; it was ridiculous. The reasons for secrecy in regard to commercial trea ties are purely traditional and have no application to any arrangement, pending or possible, relating to trade between the United States and other countries. Chicago Tribune: Whether the Re publicans can elect a United States Sena tor in this State or not is an open ques t'o3. They havo an equal chance with the Democrats on division of the joint Assembly, and they will havo an advan- tago in tho candidacy" of Gen. Logan, whose bearing during tho late Presiden tial campaign won tho admiration of all parties and made him hosts of friends and admirers all over tho country. Cincinnati Knmiircr (Dem.) There are a number of Columbus Democrats who have, in the inscrutable wisdom of Provi dence, survived the Silurian period, and who feel authorized to champion Mr. Thurman in matters of great National consequence, localise in the ups and downs of iolitics they havo been occasion ally entertained at the distinguished statesman's sideboard, or have been per mitted to gather around the Thurman fireside on a winter evening and suggest ol l-womeu cures for tho ex-Senatorial rheumatism.
