The train was atwut two hours out of Chicago when it rati into a heavy -now drift, in which the engine was puwi rh s. 'I he -now was soon piled as high as the car-, both ahead of the train and behind it, and for three da) and nearly four nights the pastngers were virtually prisoner. Hunters Discover the Retreat of -the Noted Bandit Murrel. Nashville, Feb. IX A genuine sensation was created iu this State to-d ly by the dis covery iu Carroll county of tho supposed cave of John A Murrel, the celebrated mur derer, robber, forger, counterfeit! r and bandit, who was the terror of this Western country atout fifty years ago. The cave is situated on the farm of W. C. DIair, and was di-coered by a party of hunters. When the hunters first entered the cave a largj num ber of bats and owls flew out, many falling to the ground when the air struck them. Lanterns were procured and on exam ining the rixmi was found to be ceiled with rough boatds, and in one corner the hunters were horrified to find the skele ton of a man chained to thetloor and several heuvy wtKxlen chairs and a largo table, on which lay a deck of plaj ing cards. Deneath the table was the skeleton of a woman, also chained to the lloor. On the wall was w rit ten, yet plain enough to be rei'd, "John A. Murrell, ImIV Several pairs of handcuffs, two large knives, two dried-np frames of large bloodhounds, were also conveyed. Large numbers of people visited the cave, but a few have had courage to enter it. THE TAMMANY CHIEF. His Health Still Unimproved and His Situation Critical. New Yons, Feb. II. John Kelly, the Tammany leader, has been ill for some time, and has taken no part in public affairs. A special to the Drooklyn Enjh' this afternoon from Itockaway Deech, says that Kelly hav ing expressed a strong belief in tho air cure for him, he was brought to that place re cently by his friends, and spent several days at the Waters Hotel. His hopes were not realized, however, and finding that he was growing worse instead of better, his physi cian decided to take him back to Yew York. He left for this city to-day on a special train. His condition is said to be critical. A Costly License. St. Louis, Feb. YX Frank Hanneman, tho keeper of a saloon at ISIS North Droad way, was fined $0,000 by Judge Dennison for keeping his saloon without a license. It ex pired January at which time a remon strance against further maintenance of the concern was circulated in the block, and re ceived the signatures of a largo majority of the householders. Ho continued to carry on his business in hope that something could be done to induce his opponnts to abate their opiosition. They entered a prosecution against him to force him out. Every day of keeping open constituted a new offense, and yesterday the Court fined him xiXXJ in each of twenty cases. "For Women Must Weep." Grand Haven, Feb. lo. Tho steamer Wis consin is about six miles off this harbor and prevented from entering by the blockade of ice. Her commander, Capt. McGregor, will bring her in if it can bo done. Tho Michi gan has not been heard frorn since Monday, and there is great anxiety. The Oneida is in port. The storm has abated. Nothing but a strong erst wind will break np the ice. The Blockade Raised. Kalamizoo, Feb. hi. The temperature hereabouts last night was 'js3 below zero; at noon 2 below. A Party of Grand Rapids Democrats Pay Their Respects to Cleveland and Manning. Ai-Jianv, N. Y., Feb. 1 .5. 1 1 is certain that up to this time Cleveland has made no ten der of Cabinet positions either orally or by letter to any person. He has made himelf familiar with the opiuious of leading mem bers of the Democratic parjy, and is consid ering the 'matter quietly. Vhu only callers to-day at lus Willett street residtuco were a delegation from Michigan and Judge Abbott, Do-don. It is thought that Senator Daniel W, Yoorhees (the Tall Svcamoreof the Wa bash) will be here to-morrow morning, although it whs stated this evening on good authority that it was not certainly known that he was coming. The time of Cleveland has been almost wholly taken up idnco his return from New York by people who for the mot part have called only to pay their re spects. A party of gentlemen from Grand Kapids, wlio were members of the Cleveland and Hendricks club of that place, asked that they be accorded a half hour's interview. They will be here to-morrow or Monday. After Monday Cleveland will absolutely de cline to see anyone, without exception, as he feels that he must have some time to him self. The Michigan delegation, after calling on Cleveland, paid their respects to Manning and assured him they should be pleased at his appointment to and acceptance of tho lortfolio of Secretary of the Treasury. Man ning paid he wished no position and it would be more in accordance with his desire not to take any. Many of his friends here, however, believe he will finally accept tho position. VAS3AR IS SCORCHED. A List of the Firms Who Suffer from the Devouring Flames. Yassab, Mich., Feb. 13. The greatest fire Yassar has over seen broke out in the upper story of the Driggs block at 1 o'clock this morning, caused by a defective Hue. The firms burned out by the fire were: Hough Sisters, millinery, stock insured for 1,000; nearly all saved. Mrs. J. W. Driggs, millin ery; loss on building 2.7); insured. II. C. The burned district will bo rebuilt. Yassar needs more adequate fire protection. Indiana Bound to be Recognized. Washington, Feb. l.'k Senator Deck has prepared a memorial, which has been signed by a majority of the Democratic Senators, urging the appointment of Mr. McDonald for the cabinet. The memorial will be for warded to Mr. Cleveland to night. In course of a couple of days Senator Yoorhees will visit Mr. Cleveland at the head of the Indi ana delegation, in the interest of Mr. McDonald.- The latter gentle man's friends had advised this action to offset the evil influence of Mr. Hen dricks, which they are convinced is being secretly used against McDonald. They say if Hendrieks would only make an honest, sincere request for McDonald, Cleveland would appoint him, but so far Hendricks has simply damned him with faint praise. Mc Donald's friends here have become very much worked np on tho matter. ' Unless Mr. McDonald is appointed to a Cabinet place there will be a serious split in the camp of the Indiana Democracy. A Murderer in Luck. Philadelphia, Feb. 12. Dr. Goeren, whoso execution was fixed for March r, next, for tho murder of his wife's mother-in-law by poisoning, will probably escape the gal lows. Sadie Sonder, a niece of Goerzen's deceased wife, upon whoso testimony tho acensed was convicted, made a confession in which she swears that the story she told at both trials was false, that she was coerced into committing perjury by her aunt's brother, Joseph Souder. Sadie Souder will Wednesday next appear before the Doard of Pardons at Harrisbnrg and corroborate what she has sworn. The probability is that Goerzen's sentence will be commuted to im prisonment for life. . Safe Blowers Captured. F.LMim, N. Y., Feb. 1:1. All of the five men who blew open the vault of Sc ley's bank in Osceola, Pa., this morning and stole L.V are now in custody at this plac. A FRENZiED LOVER Tries to Kill Himself Because he is Jilted by the Woman he Loves. Jackson, Feb. l.'i. James Tollister, col ored, lately became enamored with Mrs. Wesley, colored, with whom ho boarded. His affection was rejected as sjie had n husband, and told him of Tollister's advances. Tollis ter was advised to seek another boarding place, which he did. Last night Tollister at tended a party where Mrs. Wesley was one of the guests. Ho called her aside and attempt ed to cut her throat with a knifo which he snatched from a table. Her screams brought help, and she was rescued. Tollister then at tempted to cut his own throat, but was pre vented. He went to Rogers' barber shop, where ho was employed, and at 2 o'clock this morning it was found he had cut his throat with a razor, the gash running from ear to ear, severing the windpipe. He came to the door to admit a physician, and the blood spurted from the wound at every step, splashing the furniture, fioor and window. Tollister is just alive.
