THE BAND FROM LYNN. When the management of the Corn Belt Exposition engaged the Lynn band, ufter the brilliant success of the Iowa State band last staaon, it was with some little apprehension that the eastern or ganization, although of established rep utation and highly recommended, might not strike the popular western fancy as acceptably as its predecessor. And even after the band arrived and had given one or two concerts, there were those who 9aid they vere fine players and all that, but their selections were quite a little too classical and not calculated to please the masses. That was a week or more ago, but what is the verdict now of the thousands of Com Belt people who have flocked to their concerts in daily increasing num bers? And what is the judgment of the music lovers of Mitchell who have missed but very few of the 250 numbers rendered by the band since the Kxposi tiou opened? It has been the pleasure of this writer to hear many of the great bands of this country the Marine, Gilmore's and Currier's famous Cincinnati band, as well as the Iowa State—and it is not ful some Battery to rank the New England organization with- any of these when it comes to artistic and -finished perform ance. The Lynn band may not be as showy in some respects, it may not re sort to factitious methods to produce an effect, and it may sometimes seem to play over the heads of a majority of its listeners, but its performances as a whole are satisfying as well as enter taining, elevating as well as exhilirat ing, and always rendered with the per cision, expression and spirit thai mark true artistic methods. The band is also especially agreeable in its personnel. Prof. Hatch, its lead er, has a most fascinating personality both on and olT the stage, and but for his extreme modesty, would have been made asocial lion during his stay. He is devoted to his profession, however, and although a stern disciplinarian when on duty, he is most genial in his personal relations with his men as their devo tion to him testifies. His dominating leadership is shown in every note that is struck, and his true artistic sense is evidenced in the character of his selections. The soloists, Messrs. Day, Phinney, Hagget, Brandt and Dwyer, have won a lasting place in the affections of their audiences. Each is an artist in his par ticular line, and it needed only the an nouncement of a number by any one of them to insure an encore. The other members are not only musicians of high grade, but their conduct while in the city has been that of gentlemen in ev ery particular, and not a few of them have formed friendships that may not end with the close of the Exposition season. THE lmiKTAIiliir CONVENTION Committee on Resolutions at. "Work on Their lleport. ST. LOUIS, Oct. 6.—It was late in the morning before the delegates to the Pan-American bimetallic convention began to assemble at Armory hall. Many of the visitors had attended the festivities of the evening and were not disposed to get down to work at the hour set for the recouveiling of the body, which was 9 o'clock. They dropped into the hall in twos and threes, but they came very slowly and it was nearly 10 o'clock before there were enough of them on hand to warrant Governor Lewelling in resinning busi ness. The programme for (lie day's proceedings was announced as "Discus sion," and almost all the bimetallists cauie prepared to make a speech. In deed, to discuss the great problems which the league desires to clear up, is the principal work of the convention. The adoption of resolutions as a result of this oratory will be the Crowning Action of tlio Body. The committee ou resolutions consists of: Mexico, H. M. Taylor Colorado, Governor D. H. Waite Iowa. Governor Lewelling, upon calling the delegates to order, read a large number of letters from prominent bimetallists who were un able to attend. Each of the writers expressed his regret in his inability to attend, and then went into an argu ment, more or less lengthy, setting forth the reasons why Ihere should be two money metals and why the South and West should unite for their com mon interest. MAY BIS A COAL FAMINE. Kansas City Dealers Anticipate a Strike. KANSAS CITY, Oct. 5.—There is con siderable anxiety among Kansas City coal operators over the prospect of a long winter strike among the coal miners of the Bevyr and Ardmore dis tricts, in Macon county. The first in timation of serious trouble came Sat urday afternoon when a dispatch was received at the Kansas and Texas Coal company's office stating that the men were "squaring up their rooms and quitting work." The mines are idle and the miners are at Ardmore, where a mass meeting is being held to deter mine what course they shall pursue. There are between 2,500 and 8,000 miners in the district. The trouble grows out of an effort on the part of the companies to reduce the prices paid to the miners. Heretofore there has been a summer price of 50 cents a ton for mine run coal, and a winter price of 60 cents, the winter price going into effect Oct. 1 and last ing six months. Prisoners Escape.
