Yankton, S. I).—The recent import
ant action of the United States Steel
Corporation in undertaking an inves
tigation ol conditions of labor and
living among its own employees, is
the outcome of tlie work of a South
Dakota young man, Mr. John A Fitch,
formerly of Huron, this state, who
was educated al Yankton College
both in Ins preparatory and college
courses, gradual iir in 1004.
The histr. in ilie alTairs, as re
ported in an article in the October
number ol ihe American Magazine
entitled "A Great Corporation Inves
tigating Itself" is briefly as follows:
In IIHi'.i Mr. Fitch published in
Charities and Commons (now The
Survey Magazine) tin? results of Ins
invest igat ion ol labor conditions in
tlie si eel industry at Pittsburgh. Mr.
Fitch's report, which was widely com
mented upon, was taken in hun by
Mr. Charles M. Cabot, of Boston, .i
stockholder of the Steel Corporation
who realized his share of responsibil
ity as a stockholder for the existing
for
evils of labor conditions in the steel 5"
industry. Mr. Cabot secured the con
sent of Judge (5ray the executive head
of the Steel Corporation, to the plan
of having Mr. Fitch prepare an article
jto be mailed to each of the 15,000
I stockholders of the Company, setting .5
fort It the conditions that needed rem-
edy and advocating progressive poli- 3
icies in general. That article was pre
Turkish! Pared by Mr. Fitch, and, in order to
bring public sentiment to bear upon
stockholders, was first given publi
cation in The American Magazine of gg
March, lilll, under the title "O'd
Age at Forty."
Judge Gray Balked.
Although Judge Gray was after all
unwilling to allow Mr. Fitch's article
1 to be mailed to the stockholders of
the corporation, the appeal of the
article was so strong and public sen
timent everywhere so strongly arous
ed, that upon further pressure now
brought to bear by Mr. Cabot, the
Steel Corporation appointed its own ,•
ad-(committee from among its stockhold
ers, with Stuyvesant Fish former pre
sident of tli' Illinois Central, as
chairman, to look into the truth of
Mr. Fitch's report, of labor conditions
in tlie steel company.
The report of this committee, re
centiv issued, amply confirms all that
Mr. Fitch hud previously published
regarding the terrible evils of the
twelve-liour day, of Sunday labor,--':
and of the system of "speeding" as
practiced in the steel industry. The

According to Judge Green Poland-"'
invested money in a number of-niov--
ing picture houses and in a San

"There is, n.o evidence of Poland's
money having been spent in riotous

has lived extravagantly, but generally
it appears to have been a case of
desiring to attain sudden riches. He
thought to become a motion picture

Poland is 28 years old. He is mar
