ROKLEY, SOUTH DAKOTA, THURSDAY, PROGRESSIVES ORGANIZE According to call about forty or fifty republicans met in Centerville last Tuesday and perfected an organ ization for the county. The meeting was called to order by Andrew Bogue. J. J. Murphy was elected chairman and W. H. King secretary. The following committees were then appointed: Permanent organization —Pinney Widlon, Roantree, Browne and Borman. Resolutions—Andrews, Bogue, Anderson, Ege and Good hope. The committee on organiza tion reported in favor of a county organization with J. J. Murphy as chairman with a county committee of seven members. The following were appointed as such committee: Browne, Widlon, King. Pinney, Lak ings, Jas. Thomson and Dingman. The committe on resolutions re ported resolutions endorsing the Huron progressive platform and pledged the conference to the sup port of those principles. Governor Vessey was present and addressed the meeting for a few minutes. In the evening a large meeting was addressed by the governor who defended his administration and de clared in favor of the progress of the state and the proper support of all state institutions. No county ticket was nominated or discussed, the general feeling seeming to be that the primary was the proper place to settle candidates. NAMES OF CITIES. They Are Frequently Miscalled by Travelers Abroad. "How far are you going?" asked my fellow traveler as we came across the St Gottbard. "To Paris," I replied. He looked puzzled. Then I recollected that he Svas ati Italian and that he had told me he had never been out of Italy before. "Parigi," I said, smiling, and he knew ut once what I meant. Then it occurred to me to mention London to him and see If he tinder stood. He obviously did not. "Lon dra," translated. "Ah, Londra!" he repeated. "Yes, yes." Here were two of us journeying together across Eu rope In an age which Is supposed to have broken down the barriers that once hindered free intercourse, yet we- were not even agreed as to tb* names of the principal places oti our route. He called Milan Milahd, Florence Firenze, Turin Torino, Naples Napoll. For Basle he said Basilea and Lucerna for Lucerne (which the Swiss them selves call Luzern. pronouncing the "z" like ts». Stop a moment, though. When I say he called Florence Firenze, and so on, I am laying myself open to miscon ception and the charge of insular in solence. Rather should I put it that we English il! Firenze Florence, just as we call Pndova Padua and Livorno Leghorn. We cannot even give the E(?rnal City its proper beautiful name. Instead of Roma we say Rome, which is only a trille better than the Ger mans. who deep down in their thrOats grunt out "Rom." The Germans are very bad offenders i« this matter of miscalling places, for they give them often such Cacophonous equivalents as one would never think of connecting with the real name. The first time I went to Italy let the train leave Bellinzona without me. 1 tf-as drinking a cup of coffee and it slipped off. I thoroughly enjoyed a sunny September afternoon's ramble amid vineyards and along the shore (so far as I recollect) of an enchanting little lake. Then I went back to the station to catch the evening service to Milan. Presently a long and important look ing train thundered in. On it were boards—"Berlin-Mailand." I regarded them idly, wondering where Mailand was and why I had never heard of it before. It was only when I saw a friendly porter wildly summoning me to enter and heard a guard crying, out, "Chiasso, Como, Milano," that 1 re alized the situation and understood Idfalland to be German for the city we call Milan. The German for Venice Is even more 111 sounding—'"Venedig." Who would ever associate that liarsh UiByllable with the glories and loveli ness of the miracle city of the lagoons? —Loudon Mail. KTJMBEK 49 A failing tiny nerve—no larger than the finest silken thread—takes from the heart its impulse, its pow er, its regularity. The Stomach also has its hidden, or inside nerve. It was Dr. Shoop who first told us it was wrong to drug a weak or failing Stomach, Heart or Kidneys. His prescription—Dr. Shoop's Restora tive—is directed straight for the cause of these ailments—these weak and faltering inside nerves. This, no doubt clearly explains why the Restorative, has of late grown so rapidly in poplarity. Druggists say that those who test the Restorative even for a few days soon become fully convinced of its wonderful merit. Anyway, don't drug the organ. Treating the cause of sick ness is the only sensible and success* ful way. Sold by H. J. Pier. NOTICE OF TIME APPOINTED PHOVINO Will Slate of South Dakota.
