,E SENTINEL. itrookiags, Dakota, March 10, 11)31'. Geo 14. Breed and Chas. D'A. Wright, Frikxhh, Patrons and Fellow Citizens of Buookino* Poi nty! In tliis tlw* first issue of The Bkookinoh CorxTY Sentinel we wish to extend to nil upright citizens, and we believe such inhabit our coun ty, the hand of mutual friendship. We are here to represent the whole county of Brookings, from all parts of which we wish to establish a regular corres pondence. We shall endeavor at present and in years to come, to chron icle all suitable news, brought to our notice, also to bring before the public mind and discuss general topics of in terest. And if at any time mistakes should appear in our columns, we ask the public, patrons or otherwise, to kindly inform us of them, and we will do all in our power toward rectifica tion. The old saving “To be a pub lic benefactor is to lie greater than to be a millionaire” is vet true; never theless we arc not presumptuous enough to claim that our only object in sacrificing our time and expending our monev is for the mere purpose of building up Brookings Countv and helping its inhabitants whom we deem sutlicientlv able to help themselves; but rather that the inhabitants, county and editors, placidly assisting one another mav grow strong together. One of the first intorrogatives raised upon the starting of a newspaper, is in regard to its home politics, that questions can only be decided by our columns in the future; however we start the Sentinel as a not pledged to any man, men or fac tion of whatever name here or else where existing. We are not believers or participat ors in picking Haws, 'vet should anv » mrious sentiment aiiso, the Sentinel will stand firmly, through thick and thin for what it deems right. For “It is better to be right than to be President”. *. • ft fs2s~lr is stated by an eastern ex change that if a ten ton paper-mill was to be built every week for the next year the supply of goods would not equal the demand. fjpe'.-ince the first of the vear, sl2, 231,748 in specie have been exported at New York, against ¥2,448,(Ml for the same time in 1881. And with our imports in excess of our exports this condition of things is likely to con tinue. ►- * -•- One of the most remarkable trials that ever took place in Dakota was that of Crow Dog for the murder of Sjtotted I'ail. The question oflaw and practice were novel, and being without precedent, confused the court, and the testimony was so contradictory it was believed that it would confound the jury. But the twelve apjtear to have averaged it, for they returned a verdict of guilty as charged in the in dictment, and the death sentence will follow. Crow Dog dosn't seem to grasp the situation, for he seems stol idly indifferent to the delicacy of his position. —Pioneer J'n.m. is no difference among the people of tliis land as to what they want done with jmlygomy—stamped out, at all costs. And there is a straight and simple way of doing it— U> deal with it in Utah exactly as everywhere else, by statute and crim inal procedure, treating each individ ual without the slightest reference to his associations or appeals to religious beliefs; and to execute the laws, if need be, by the entire force of the United State's. If there he difficulty in obtaining evidence of a marriage cere mony, proceed on the principle of adopting in this State, tliut the act of living together as man and wife es tablishes the relation in the eyes of the law. And if this does not avail, declare the Mormon community a nuisance, and in a state of outlawry, to he broken up like a nest of serpents or malaria. The spectacle is pitiable and scandalous, that this thing should go in defiance of law, government and public sentiment.— C'/irintinn In tellij/encer. m As soino of our jmatrons have reques ted us to publish the law concerning lawful methods of catching fish and killing game we quote the following from the session laws of Dakota ad dopted March 3rd., 1881. KISH LAW. It shall be unlawful for any jierson or persons to take, catch, kill or des troy any ijsh in any manner whatso ever, except by angling with hook and line or spear, in any of the lakes, and all streams except the Missouri and Red River of the Territory of Dakota, or any inlet or outlet of said lakes between the first day of March and the fifteenth day of October in , J ’ * any year. GAMK I.AW. It shall he unlawful for any person or jMtmoua to kill, esnsre or trap in any form or maimer, or by any device whatever, any q'uuj, prairie chicken, grouse, snip-a, plover or curlew, be iwi'H the mat da v of January and the fifteenth day of i ia each and * rc. v year. * 00b v O rrai.isiiKD tmcksuays nr EDITORS AND PROPRIETORS. KALITATORY. LAWS. srv ™" Ml J &!*** ergeant John A. Mason who attempted to shoot (iuiteau, is dishon orably discharged from the army, by the, court martial, with the loss of all pay and allowances, and is to be confined, iff hard labor, in the peni teiitimy eiglityenrs. “The meaning, not the letter of the law should be olreyed.” Were the letter of our law and jKipulace who established the law consulted John A Mason would be entitled to a reward rather than • a forfeit for his patriotic ai t. Dili ton. The people of Barton are very quiet, hut they are alive, and think it is time this part of the county was represented in our county pajmrs. The chief subject of interest at present is the weather, which has been so very changeable of late that all weather prophets are Incoming discouraged. NVe la rar there was a genuine bliz zard in Brookings last week, but we don’t acknowledge anything of the sort, at least nothing resembling those of a year ago. The people from here, who spent the winter in the east, are returning and all seem glad to get back to the land of good road and no mud. Among the number are Mr Ken yan ami family, who came back Imt ter pleased with their western home than ever. Our merchant Mr. Driekens, is still doing a thiving business, but would prefer blizzards ami blockades to such a beautiful winter ns tin* past. The family of S. 11. Doughty was made happy the other day by the arrival of their household goods from their old home in Wisconsin. M. S. Sherwood is looking for a good oat season as we hear he in tends to put in about 80 acres of that grain this spring. Hope oats, will biing *I.OO per bushel next fall. Mr. 1). Doughty is still vibrating between his home in Barton and his shop in Brookings, hut we are in hopes that the time is not far distant when lie will find it more profitable to run a shop in his own town. B. 15. Cronk has moved back upon his homestead, he thinks he has about reduced the art of moving to a science and if there are anv who wish for instructions they may on 11 around in about six months anil take practi cal lessons. Barton Literary Society, which lias taken an active part in the amusement as well as instruction of the precinct, has aj<turned until Nov. 3rd. when it is hoped all members will be prepar ed to fill places assigned them in the pn igramme. An enterprising sabbath school is held at the school house every Sun day. I). Doughty Sup’t. A large at tendance is earnestly desired. If these few items find a place in tin* Sentinel vou may hear from us again. Klktmi. Tho lirst of tliosprinj; months lias nearly come to a rinse, ami contrary to the general expectation in the lore part of the month no seeding Ims been done as yet. Farmers and all. in this section appear to he ready and easier to bo;;i!i operations, and possibly before the issue of your paper may be actively enoajjcd in soedinjr. A large amount of land will be cultivated and a greater variety of crops raised than during last season; corn will be planted quite extensively and there is no reason why a good crop may not la* raised here, if plant ed on old ground, and the same care and attention is bestowed upon it as it receives in Illinois or lowa. Farmers will find they can make money by raising corn and fattening hogs for their own use so long as they are obliged to pay from 10 to 1 cents for jiork shipped here from the east, considerable sorghum will also be raised provided farmers are assured they can get their crop worked up near home. There is one farm industry which seems to be much neglected although it is quite as remunerative if not more so than any other connected with fanning and that is butter mak ing. First class butter is scarce in this market at all times of the year and commands from twenty to twenty five and thirty cents a pound any time. One farmer told me he had not sold a pound of butter in two years for less than twenty fiv.i cents a pound and that he had made more profit from his cows, than from his crops. Win. Wendelken has returned from his winter's sojourn in Minnesota ac companied by his father, mother and sister. Will brought three fine horses out to use on his farm, lie evidently intends to go at farming in earnest and we w ish him success. Wm. McKeown has lieon to Minncssota, and brought lawk a wife to “grow up with the country”. Henry Russel returned to Elk ton last week. Business is quiet, merchants arc stocking up projiairing for spring trade. Over ten thousand dollars were ex pended in improvements in Elktou last year. Schoil meeting next Tuesday. W. H. Ruddle, B. F. Huddle and Ed. Bonesteef, of Brookings were in town Monday. Deputy? Town 110, Range 52. Enrrons Sentinel:—As yon are to start a newspajier we wish you success iu your entoqirise, and also wish a place in your columns, to represent our town which is still growing fast. The farmers were all at work in their fields with full force, until the weather took a eojd; yet none hail done any seeding except .T. (iiles who has sown his new wheat lie revived from the patent office. Frank Waning is to remain at borne this coming summer. J. A. GJgrove came up a few days ago xnd brought his seed wheat with Lint Ha will low the Russian fife. v V 'V ' * i.W*- Lumber, Lath, Sash, Youmans Bros, & Hodgins, ARK NOW READY TO KILL YOUR ORDERS.
