Hie eighth annual fair of the Brookway District Agricultural So oiety was held on the socioty'w grounds in Brookway, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of last week. The weather was all that could be asked for, tho entries ex ceeded those of last year, there be ing orer 900 in all departments, tho attendance was very large, the re ceipts likewise, and, in faot, tho fair was a grand success. As one reached the grounds he hardly, knew where to go lirst, but we will make montion of matters and things as they were classified in the premium lists. In cattle the oxhibit was good, there being 32 entries. . Among the exhibitions was noticed a thorough bred Durham bull, by Isaao Curry, one by Win Shannon and one by E. E. Bowman. Grade cattle by J. W. Guatin, Jas Foley, Jos Eastman, D. C. Smith, A. E. Sh oarer and others. Native cattle by J. W. Gustin, E. A. Gustin, Andrew Ballhoff and a number of others. In working cat tle, Jos Eastman and Wm Morgan showed the best yokes. In the class for steers, Chas Presley's and James Foley's took tho first premiums. The exhibition of horses was very large, there being 120 cntrios. It soems to be tho pride of the farmers in the Township of I J rock way to own good horses, and they also take a groat deal of pride in allowing them. We have space, only to mention the better ones. In the class for stallion.- and fillies for all work, was no ticed J). C. Eck, stallion, Charles Tapnc, 3-yr-old stallion, L. Brown, fl-yr-old stallion, Wm Seott a lino 2-yr-old stallion, and a largo number of yearlings and 2-yr-old stallions by different parties. For general pur pose horse, Wm White showed a lino roadster stallion, and Svveetriian & Clemnen a good carriago horse. For heavy draught horses J. Gloss how, D. McKcnzio and J. A. Yin cent showed the best horses, two years old, whilo Jas Sterling, John Smith and J. Kane exhibited voun stallions. Eugcno Iviely showed his lino draught team which was de barred from taking a premium, hav ing taken first last year. The show of sheep was extra good this year there being 53 entries. The exhibition included Cotswolds, Lei sters, Jifcrinos and Lincoln. Geo. Sanderson, J). McKenzio and E. P. Parsons had tho best display, al though others were worthy of men tion. The display of swiue was Bmall. There vero 11 entries and divided among Berkshires. Poland China and grades. The exhibition of poultry was vory fair there being 35 eiitries in cluding light brahmas, buff cochins, black Spanish, leghorns, dorkins, Hamburg, ply moth rocks, in chick ens, besido geese, turkeys and ducks. In agricultural implements the display was very large. The princi pal exhibitors were Chas Grieb, of Fort Huron, Jas Cogley, of Emmet, Wm 11. Gillctt,'of Iliiey Centre W. & J. Harris had a splendid display of their celebrated mako of wagons and buggies. J. D. Yivian, of this place, had a nice display of carriages and wagons; T. Darey & Uo. took the first premium for an oiled wagon. The fruit and vegetable depart nivnts were well filled by these farm products, which goes to show that this district is well uji in fruit grow ing. One tiling wo noticed particu larly was the effect thu sold weather of September had had on fruit, es pecially on grape", they not having ripened thoroughly, fimply having changed in color, not taste. In the fancy gooJ; department the display was very extensive. Quilts, coverlets, worsted and crochet work, embroidery anil such like, hung about iu profusion and of that kind that takes tho prize, loo. On the west end of iloral hall wo noticed a very fine display of cut llowers which were very beautifully arranged into bo'piets, plates, etc. We aro sorry to say that our space not permit us to mention tho exhibitors. The last day's sports incliuTed horse races which were called short ly after 2 o'clock in thi? afternoon. Tho first race called was a one mile trotting racu, best 3 in 5. There were four entries with threo to start but Black Billy entered tho race in tha second heat under protest, he only trotted two heats, however, when ho was withdrawn. The race was concluded with tho fourth heat, Little Dan winning lirst money, Kit Carson second, Kittie Sutton third. The second and last race was a half mile running race, best 2 in 3. There were four entries and four to start. John Brown secured lirst money, Tight Eyo second and Spot third. According to tho program there was to havo been another race, but the entries were not tilled and it was ac cordingly declarod off. Ono thing we were sorry to note were the games of chance allowed on tho grounds, and that intoxicating lienors were sold under such names as "Tolu Rock and llye" and "Peru Hock and Kyo." As a whole, the fair gave the Lest of satisfaction as it always has Hince its organization. Tho society liave good grounds, good spacious build ings and what is most needed good ollicers. MAKltli:i.
