Its Hearings Spicy Testimony.
Tbe court-martial of Surgeon Sidney
A. Sumby of tbe District National
Guard, cbarged with drunkenness
while on duty and conduct unbecom
ing nn ofllccr, was continued last even
ing in tho Ccntro Market building. Tbo
first witness, Lieutenant Charles R.
Douglass, adjutant of tho Eighth Bat
talion, testified as to tbo Now York
trip. Surgeon Sumby was very drunk,
bo said, nnd used profano language in
tbo cars. Ho also resisted tbo guard
that tried to place him under aircst.
Tho next witness, First Lioutenant J.
F. Wilkinson of tho Capital City
Guards, who testified as to the Sur
geon's drunkenness on tho night of Sep
tember 28. IJo said that while tho
lioops wero marching past tbo Treasury
Dcpaitment a lieutenant had to lock
arms with Sumby to prevent him from
falling.
Chaplain John Edward Purdy testi
fied that Surgeon Sumby on tho occa
sion cbarged was drunk, profano and
indecent.
Tho surgeon attempted to interrupt
tbo court nnd witnesses in his own be
half, but finally desisted and allowed
bis lawyer, AV. Calvin Chase, to exam
ino tbe witnesses. In answer to a ques
tion from tho latter, Chaplain Purdy
denied that bo was turned out of the
thuich for stealing. Tho court was
adjourned until Monday evening at 7
o'clock.

poration laws not being enforced by tbo

them to show causo by maudamus why
they do not do so.

one year ago was convicted of tho mur
der of her infant child in the Criminal
Court aud sentenced to bo hung, but
afterward sent to tho penitentiary for
ten years, was dead. It Is now claimed
that the report is an erroneous one.

Dr. O'Connor on tho Brain,
The human brain was tho subject of
Dr. Joseph T. O'Connor's lecture yes
terday afternoon at tho Catholic Uni
versity, it being a continuation of his
lectures on tbo same subject. Tho
Doctor gavo nn historical icvlow of tho
subject, and said tho pscudo scienco of
phrenology bad never found extensive
acceptance among medical men, but
caused a reaction to tho view of Flou
rens, that tbe brain acted only as a
whole. The next lecture, on Wednes
day afternoon at 4:15 o'clock, will treat
of tho brain tracts and tbo connection
of tbo different parts of tho brain with
each other and with tho periphery of
the bodv.
