Delegate Wickersham is quoted by
the Fairbanks News-Miner of using
the following remark in a speech there
two days before election;
I am an Alaskan first of all and not
taking orders from the president of
the United States.
ATLIN, B. C., Nov. 15.—1914 will
be a memorable year in the history of
Atlin—tho year of the fire.
On the morning of May 23rd, a fire
which originated in E. L. Pillman’s |
store, on the corner of First and Pearl!
streets, swept over and consumed j
nearly the entire business portion of
the town. The fire started about 7:30
in the morning and by 0 o’clock noth
ing remained of over thirty buildings
but a few charred embers, the finan
cial loss being upwards of $100,000.
With Sulzer, Democrat, and Tanner
(holdover), Democrat, in the Senate,
and J. (J. lleid, independent, William
Britt, Democrat, Arthur (I. Shoup,
Republican and J. R. Heckman, Re- '
publican in the House, the anti-Wick-1
ersham faction will hold the balance
of power.
The assembly will have eight j
Democrats, two Non-Partisans, six
Republicans, six Wickershamites and
one of Bull Moose tendencies. There
is one doubtful seat in the Fourth divi
sion, the result of which, however,
cannot alter the plurality of the
Democrats.—Juneau Empire.
FAIRBANKS, Former U. S. Attor-,
noy J. J. Cross ey and family left yes
terday for Portland, where he will
pratico law and make his future home.
A fund of $650.00 has been raised
here for the benifit of the American
Red Cross.
J. C. Rogers, who just returned
from broad 1'ass, verifies the report of
the discovery of a limitless amount of
low grade ore there. “The greatest
ledge in the world has been uncover
ed," he says.
Acting under instructions from
Washington, United States Attorney
R. F. Roth today reduced his office
force from three to one assistants.
FAIRBANKS, Nov. 14.—William J.
Fitzpatrick, pioneer sourdough, who
has been United States commissioner
at Chena for many years, died Thurs
day of complication. His funeral will
be held today.
CIRCLE CITY.—A messenger ar
rived from the diggings this morning,
reporting that a light started last
night in a bawdy house at Miller
House kept by Alice Christopher. It
appears that William Lehman, James
Taughery and E. S. Erickson got into
a mixup and that Lehman and Taugh
rey took sides against Erickson. In
the melee revolvers were used, and as
a result Taughrcy and Erickson are
reported dangerously wounded.
CIRCLE CITY.—Palmer of Circle,
who was insane and under guard at
Hot Springs on the Fairbank -Circle
trail, died and was buried at the
Springs.
