AUSTRIANS DEFEAT RUSSIANS VIENNA, Jan. 27.—The official statement by the Austrian government, issued this morning, relates that the Russians have been forced to evacuate several strong positions in the Carpathian mountains. Those positions consisted of heights which gave the enemy a considerable advantage. The places are now occupied by the Austrian troops. The opinion created in this country by official statements is that the Austrians and Germans by their at tacks on the Russian center will compel the Russian armies of the left to retire from Austrian territory. It is generally believed that a week or ten days will decide the question. ___ — BIG AUSTRALIAN ARMY SYDNEY, Jan. 27.—The Australian government has now under way plans for the raising of a rifle reserve army of half a million men who will be sent to Europe to tight for the allies should the war be prolonged longer than people expect. The army will receive training dur ing certain periods that will not interfere with the bus iness pursuits of the recruits, It is assumed that half a million men can be raised for the purpose although it will probably mean the training of every man of military age and capability in the Commonwealth. - BRITISH CASUALTIES SLIGHT LONDON, Jan. 27.—The British warships that were! engaged in the battle ofl’ the north coast of Holland last Sunday with the Germans have returned. The dread- j naughts Lion and Tiger and the destroyer Meteor were: slightly damaged but the British casualties were slight. The Lion and Tiger are two of the great, new ships of the British navy, each of them having a displacement of 25,000 or 27,000 tons. They outclassed the German ships entirely and in addition to sinking one German battle cruiser it is believed that they inflicted very serious dam age on others of the enemy’s vessels. All the ships engag ed returned to port so it is proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that no British vessel was lost. SUBMARINE WAS RUSSIAN BERLIN, Jan. 27—The torpedoing of the German cruiser Gazelle is attributed here to a Russian submarine but no continuation has been received. The Gazelle was somewhat damaged but reached a port in the Baltic sea without assistance and will soon have her injury repair ed and be ready to take to the sea again. RUSSIANS TAKE TOWN PETROGRAL). Jan. 27.—The official statement this afternoon indicates that the Russians have taken an of-1 fensive along a new route in the northern part of East | Prussia. They have occupied Pilkallen, a town near the’ frontier, between Tilsit and Stallupohen. This means that thee have again entered German territory although only for a short distance. The bomb exploded accidentally. A strong force of British is now being gathered for an attack on the neighboring German colony and an invasion will probably be under taken for the purpose of annexing the district to the United States of South Africa.__ NEWS NOTES George Hazzard has sent out a cable for the purpose of trying to se cure enough money to pay off what he is accused of having received on false pretenses.
