NEWS NOTES
Other real estate firms may be
founded in the city right away as a
consequence of the increasing optim
ism. E. 0. Sawyer was one who at
tended the meeting of the real estate
men last night. He will enter the real
estate business. This makes four new
real estate concerns that have come
to view in as many days.
Aman committed suicide at the
mouth of Lake creek about three
weeks ago. This much of the story
has been brought here by Colonel
Revel! and Dan Crowley but the name
of the man who committed the act is
j not known to them. He killed himself
! by shooting with a revolver and was
found dead in his cabin.
The Seward dancing club will hold
the last of the dances of the series
this evening.
The club of school children has re
ceived the name of the Tillicum club.

PETROGRAD, Feb. 6.—The Ger
man army in front of Warsaw is us
ing some new offensive amchinery in
very powerful land mines, which are
set at night by sappers and exploded
later by electricity. So-called “tor
pedoes” and improved hand grenades,
are also used.
The torpedoes are really bombs of
formidable size, which explode on
contact and spread death-dealing frag
ments of jagged iron, at the same
time poisining the air twenty yards
around with a deadly gas. These are
hurled silently from a sort of ballista
or catapult, which has a useful range
of about 150 feet.
The hand grenades resemble in ap
pearance a large sky rocket. A tin
canister with pointed head is fixed on
a stick or handle about two feet long.
The canister is filled with bullets and
an explosive charge fired by contact
on the pointed head. The grenade is
thrown by hand, the stick serving both
J as a handle and as a tail which rn
i sures the pointed head striking first
and exploding the contents. They are
used in infantry charges during the
few moments when the rifles cease
firing and the bayonets are not yet
i within striking distance.

1 CHFRCHES ARE FOR
PRAYING IN ONLY.
LONDON, Feb. 5.—“People do not
go to church to knit, but to take part
in the service.” said the secretary of
the Archbishop of Canterbury in re
j ply to a question which has been put
to almost every parson in England by
patriotic women. In order that the
work for the men in khaki might not
be relaxed, it was proposed that the
women be allowed to knit during ser
mon time.
“People go to church to pray, sing,
listen to the lessons and the sermon,”
continued the secretary. “ If nothing
is going on, they had better be on
their knees praying for the soldiers
on the battlefield and for themeslves.”

LONDON, Feb. 5.—An instance of
the human qualities of Lord Kitchener

The woman's one desire was to see

Four of them were in the English
training camps and obtained leaves of
absence through the offices of the
Salvation Army. But the mother long
ed to see the youngest, wrho was serv
ing in Flanders. I.ord Kitchener was
communicated with. The lad there
upon received seven days’ furlough,
with ration and expense money, and
arrived in time to see his mother be

ONE MILITARY MAN
WHO IS A SPORT.
LONDON, Feb. 5.—The officers of
the 4th Dragoon Guards at the front
