NEWS NOTES Some people have asked why the Gateway does not publish a statement from another paper regarding town site surveys by the government in the Seward neighborhood. It can be said that no authority is given by the other paper for the statement and that if a paper published everthing it saw it would only lead the people astray tn most eases. We may be all sure the government of the United States will do nothing to rob people of their prop erty, or rob their property of its value. Joe HolTman was in the city today from his homestead where he is work ing hard breaking ground and plant ing. He describes his porcupine hunt ing so vividly that he might be re garded as a practised quill driver. Joke. The name of Mrs. F. Mears appears on the Alameda passenger list. She is the wife of Lieutenant Fret! Mears of the engineering commission. Their child is also on the boat. Mr. Mears is now having a residence built at Anchorage. The W. McPhee whose name is on the passenger list is probably the famous Bill McPhee of Fairbanks. WRANGLING OVER GAMES. The surest way to kill any sport j with the public is to allow the players to wrangle or to wager on games. It; is the same as though a host and host- j ess invited guests to an entertainment • and then took up their time with per sonal quarrels. Juneau has been lib eral in support of baseball. The peo ple have no interest in private quar rels, but attend to witness the sport.' Players who wrangle on% the field should be dismissed at once. The dis sension last year caused the attend ance to drop off in a way that should be a warning to the managers.—(Ju neau Dispatch.) _ CATHOLIC CHCRCtf. - Sunday: Masses at 8:30 and 10:30 p. m. ASQUITH WILL GET MONEY LONDON, June 19.—It is now well known that Premier Asquith will be granted the two billions which he will ask the house of commons for next Monday. It is feared that the labor representatives might make some objection that will give satisfaction to Germany but of ficials declare that no real ground for this doubt exists. The time of the house for the past few days has been al- j most entirely taken up with the discussion of war sub jects but no embarrassing questions are being asked as no oppostion can be said to exist since the formation of the coalition cabinet. -- VIENNA TALKS OF ITALY VIENNA, June 19.—The accounts of the Italian campaign given out here are meager but it is officially i stated that the enemy has gained no success. According to the general staff the Italian advance has not been op posed seriously as the ground over which it was made was considered to be unfavorable as a battle ground by the Austrian commander in chief. Besides, it is mostly inhabited by Italians and the injury caused will be chiefly inflicted on*people of that nationality. _ __ BANK OF SEWARD * ESTABLISHED IN 1905 Safe Deposit Boxes For Rent THE HARRIMAN NATIONAL BANK OE ALASKA AT SEWARD OFFICERS NEW YORK IEWARD JOSEPH W.
