ANCHORAGE LOTS AVERAGED IN PRICE $225 EACH. Post Office Building is Started by the Government in New Townsite. The average price brought by the sale of lots in the new townsite of Anchorage was $225, according to the Cook Inlet Pioneer, which has just come to hand and which contains many interesting items about our j neighboring town The construction of the 4iew post office building has been commenced. Indian Jim was sentenced to three years for the killing of Chief Stepan. The first election in Anchorage will be held August 2. It will be for a School board. Clerk of Court Lang \ has named as supervisors of election L. F. Shaw. J. H. Finley and Mrs. M. T. Xormile. An injunction was issued by Judge Brown against Thomas H. Jeter com 1>eliing him to vacate the ground | claimed by him as a homestead near the town of Anchorage. An appeal was taken. ___. NEWS NOTES Frank Watson, of the Admiral line, arrived last night on the Watson, but will return to Anchorage and remain there until the new town has been settled. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Martin, who went out on the Diana thimorning with Mr. and Mrs. Dippei. will re- j turn in six weeks or two months. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Whitehead left on the Watson last night for the east to visit the parents of Mr. Whitehead. They will not return for a long period and may possibly decide to settle down outside. Mrs. W. C. Eues yesterday won the j guest’s prize at the ladies’ bridge whist club. Philip J. Hickey went out this morning on the car on a business trip to Kenai lake. He will return tomor row afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Graff yesterday celebrated their silver wedding day. ! Their hosts of friends wish them many happy returns of the day. Misses Emily Borgen and Margaret Romig returned this afternoon on the ; car from “Mother White’s where they have been spending a vacation In a letter received last night from B. F. Wood in Anchorage he writes that the people over there are slowly moving into the new townsite, but that at present the town is spread all over the country. He states that the Anchorage boosters cannot produce substantial enough facts to convince people that Anchorage is the town. They are looking to Seward, he says, for the big business and town and are getting discouraged with Anchorage. The lighthouse tender Kukui was at Kodiak when the Watson passed through and it is understood will re. main there until the arrival of the Admiral Evans. They are waiting there for the mail before going on their annual visit to the lighthouses westward. The arrival of the Kukui is an event greatly anticipated by the lighthouse keepers, as on it they get their year’s supply of food and often much delayed mail, as bad weather A large party went out this after, noon as guests of the boat of J. P. Mantell, the Columbia. Berry pick ing is the chief dissipation. Mr. and Mrs. K. F. Park and Mrs. I R, L. Thompson leave today to spend three or four days at Fourth of July creek. ENGLAND GETS OUT MUNITIONS. j LONDON, July 29.—Sixteen factories of great ca pacity are now working in England getting out munitions i of war as fast as they can for the allies, and Minister of Munitions Lloyd George is building ten additional ones.! :t has come to'be realized that in the supply of munitions chieflv will depend the outcome of the war. and heavy swells prevent the landing of freight and mail by the regular mail steamer. The boat Arnold which was burned down at Anchorage was owned by Si Slocum. On her way here the Watson picked up the crew of the ill-fated Bertha at Kodiak. They saved only their personal effects, but no injury is reported to have occurred of a physical kind. Jack Stotko’s thermometer regis tered 123 degrees this afternoon at 1 o’clock. He places implicit confidence in it as it was in the shade all the morning until about 11 a. m. When he called in. his friends to witness the phenomenon some of them suggested lighting a fire under it to develop the cheerful thing to its full capacity. E. L. Sneft sustained a severe cut to his thumb today while trying to help the fire boys when the alarm sounded. Dr. Sloan put four stitches in. The Gateway can do any sort of; printing done in the states.
