WASHINGTON, Sept. 29.—'The conditions along the Mexican borders, particularly near Brownsville, are becoming so acute that they cannot be permitted to prevail much longer. The information coming here in the last few days shows that this govern ment must take determined steps sooner or later to put an end to the Mexican lawlessness. Additional troops have been rushed to Prog rosso and Colonel Brocksom has reported to General Funston that it will be necessary for the United States troops to cross the border unless Car ranza takes it upon himself to stop the raids. BUILDING INSPECTOR PAID TO KEEP AWAY. Trials of Canadian Officials Proceed ing and Show Some Pretty Strong Graft. WINNIPEG, Sept. 29.—The trials of the prominent provincial politicians on the charge of wholesale graft be gan yesterday and are already bring ing out some sensational evidence. The testimony yesterday afternoon showed that William Salt, the govern ment building inspector for the pro vince accepted a bribe of ten thousand dollars just to stay away from the construction work on the parliament buildings in this city. One of the de fendants in the trials is a former prime minister of the province. must pave between tracks. SEATTLE, Sept. 29.—The mayor has informed the local traction com pany that it must pave the streets be tween the tracks of its lines or for feit its franchise.
