DEER HUNTERS HAVE
FIGHT WITH WOLVES
PETERSBURG, Oct. 29.—Frank
PreuscofT and Mr. Dawson Tiad an ex
hilarating encounter with a bunch of
wolves on Friday of last week.
They started from the PreuschoofT
logging camp, at Beecher Pass, for a
deer hunt. Before traveling very
far they got into a place that strong
ly resembled a wolf den—which it
proved to be.
Pretty soon a wolf head was espied
in the nearby thicket, and then an
other and then some more. They
were practically surrounded by the
beasts. Frank will swear to ten |
wolves, but they appeared more nu
merous at the time. When they had
recovered from their surprise, the
boys started the fireworks. One wolf
was quickly shot dead and three were
wounded. Then the varmints re
treated a way, and were followed up
and three more of them were killed.
Dawson followed the pack on their
second retreat to see if he couldn’t
bag some more, and Frank started in
to remove the pelts from those killed.
Soon a series of howls came from
around the den, and Frank located
a wolf in the brush whose eyes glar
ed utter disapproval of the “skin
game” being worked on the family.
He then grabbed his gun and lired
several shots which evidently went
wild; then climbed a stump—in order
to get a better view. The wolf closed
in and finally bolted right past the
stump. Frank had the muzzle of his
rifle within four feet of the wolf’s
back when he fired, but for some rea
! son the bullet missed its mark.
Although after this there was no
further demonstration by the wolves
in that vicinity, Frank didn’t care to
finish the skinning job alone, so he
went down to the camp and brought
Hans back to stand guard until the
pelts were secured.—Petersburg Re

❖ LANE STILL WANTS *
❖ DEVELOPMENT BOAUD *
❖ - ♦
WASHINGTON, D. C., Oct. 24.—
Secretary of the Interior Franklin
K. Lane has announced to the news
papers that when congress convenes
in December he will urge the pas
sage of the bill to create a develop
ment board for the purpose of admin
istering the alFairs of Alaska. He
also states that he feels sure that it
will ultimately be passed, although
he expects that some opposition will
be otrered to his plan. However, a
number of the legislators who have
the best interests of Alaska at heart,
nave already expressed themselves a
in favor of the bill.
It is supposed that the bill as in
troduced at the coming term of con
gress will be much the same as was
the old bill, which was shelved at the
term ending last spring. If so, it will
provide that the development board
consist of five members, to be ap*
pointed by the President, three of
whom will be residents of the terri
tory, to have supervision over every
thing pertaining to Alaska except the
making of the laws which govern the
territory.
As explained by the secretary the
passage of the bill will have the effect
of saving thousands of dollars to the
government annually. The bill will
provide that the headquarters of the
board will be at Juneau, where it can
work in active conjunction with the
governor and with the Alaska legis
lature, when the latter body is in
session.
The passage of the bill, however,
will have more the effect of saving
time than money. As things now
*
are, congress passes upon bills al
most without number, those pertain
ing to the development of Alaska
being but a few of the matters
brought to the attention of the leg is.
lators, but if the board is created
and given the power to do things p<*r
taining to the territory as congre s
would do them, a great deal of tone
would be gained, for the board v ould
have nothing to do other than to ad
minister the affairs of the territory.
The bill will provide that the pres
ent functions of the Fur and Fisheries
department, the Forestry department
and the United States land office
come under the jurisdiction of the
board. The matter of titles to prop
erty and patents would be handled by
the board if it handled the affairs of
the land office, while the conservation
of the forests and the use of the lum
ber of Alaska would fall to the lot of
the board, as the official representa
tive of the Forestry bureau. The
amount of taxes which should be paid
on the fish industry of the territory
would also be one of the important
•terns handled by the board.
