PORTAGE BAY MILL
LOOKS LIKE FALIURE
The Talkeetna Lumber Company,
whose operations on Portage bay have
been enveloped in an air of mystery
ever since construction of the mill
was first commenced last spring, is in
the hands of a trustee, because of non
payment of employes and the dis
appearance of official keeper of the
payroll. The trustee is H. E. Ellis,
of Valdez, who holds a mortgage on
the property.
A member of the company named
| Johnson left for Seattle several weeks
; ago to arrange to meet the payroll
I and other obligations, but failed to re
i turn or to notify the anxious credi
tors.
The Talkeetna Lumber Company
was promoted by John Endlund, for
merly of Cordova and Fairbanks. It
secured a large contract from the
Railway Commission and erected a
‘ small but complete plant near the
i head of Portage bay, where a fine
‘ body of timber was accessible.

TO LO VAN A TOWN
SHOWS RAPID GROWTH
The new town of Brooks, metrop
olis of the Tolovana mining district,
has had a growth almost as phenom
enally rapid as that of Anchorage.
| Although the first building was erect
ed there in September, there were
ninety-five completed on the 1st of
December, in addition to about fifty
tents. The town has three principal
streets, running parallel with Liven
i good creek, on the right limit, with a
majority of the business houses along
one of these for a distance of three
quarters of a mile, and the residence
portion on the gentle slope above
these. More rapid growth of the
town has been prevented by the lack
( of teams and lumber.—Cook Inlet
