SEWARD, ALASKA, THURSDAY, SEPT. 7.1916. _ The news which came to the Gateway yesterday ol the decision of the court of appeals and the consequent fact that the territory will have three-quarters of a mil lion dollars in the treasury by the time the legislature ; meets again makes it seem possible that the territory itself I may soon be able to carry on big development work ot itS| own resources with its own money. Now. however, that j Alaska’s government is getting so rich politics from this, time forward will take on a different aspect. Hitherto the territory had little to spend and politics, somehow, do not appear so important unless where funds arc involved. We have seldom heard the cry of graft in territorial poll tics before. Listen now. In a town of this size one is more or less constantly embarrassed by meeting the same people every other min ute on the street. It is all right if people who are very familiar meet all the time. They can salute or not just as they think tit and neither cares but when those halt-ac quaintances encounter each other one or both is wondei ing whether to “speak” or not alter the first meeting. Those salutations are funny things. The close acquaint ance usually says nothing but to speak the other s name. He meets Bill and he just says “Bill. And Bill sa\s “Jim ” That is enough. Sometimes it is elaborated by saying “Hello Bill” ami “Hello Jim.” When you meet one with whom the acquaintanceship is not so close you may sav “Good Morning, i his is a nice morning. It would be mighty interesting to stand at some point on Broadway for several hours some day and take down the words which all the passers-by speak to each other casuallv. Of course- when the weather is not so terribly nice you might hear a cuss word or two injected into the friendly greetings, but on the whole the salutes ol the people in a small town are worthy ol observation. lhe> have many drawbacks but the worst oi all is to walk with arursuu one cannot afford to drop those little social or namentations. Xo population could afford it. It may he a very small matter in appearance but it is more import ant than we think. It is rather remarkable to have to ship workers to Al aska this year when some thought that the territory w?as about to l>e crowded with people looking for work. Peo ple who have lived for many years in Alaska have learned that if people are let alone the population will soon adjust itself to the requirements.
