NEWS NOTES Mrs. Philip J. Hickey, Jr., the children, Mrs. Hickey, Sr., and daughter Phyllis are now in Oatman, Arizona, where the Hickeys ar° now mining. Phil writes that the country | looks good to him. Deputy Marshal S. O. Casler re turned yesterday from Valdez where he has been attending court. He \> ill go to Unga, his* home station, on the Dora. Miss Nellie (»ros void anti Miss Lena Olsen Saasted are here enroute to their home to the westward Mrs. C. A. Myers will soon leave to spend a vacation outside. C. L. Mattefeldt has been appointed chief steward of the steamer Dora in the place of Charles Dehne who re signed. H. A. Lawrence, traveling freight and passenger agent of the Union Pacific, passed through Seward yes terday on the Northwestern. A. K. Harris, passenger agent. pass-1 ed through Seward to the westward and will return on the next boat. John Dubreuil wishes to thank the tire department amt the people gener ally for their aid at the tire in the Alaska House last Saturday. Miss Grosvold who i> a passenger en the Dora is a daughter of Andrew Gra: vo*d and Miss Saasted who ac companies her is his niece whom he has just brought from Norway. She came direct and the only friend* "die had coming across the continent were those to whom she got letters of in troduction from Alex McTN>naui of Seward. She is very young and tin able to speak English. Henry Oliver has returned after quite an absence from the city. Mrs. Neil and Mrs. Hettel are off to spend a week at Grand View, the line place of Mrs. Neil at Mile 45. Mr. ami Mrs. Fred Tracy left for Anchorage yesterday on the North western after a visit with their many friends. l>r. 0. J. Keating went to Anchor age yesterday on a business trip. Mrs. Phillips anti her little daughter went west on tho Northwestern. The loss by Saturday's tire tn the Alaska House will amount to hun dreds of dollars, perhaps even another naught could be added to it. The up per story was cleaned out inside and the rest of the building was badly damaged by water. Some parents are now figuring on getting out a petition to ask the school board to go back to standard time. The earlier hour of getting the children ready for school is already found to be a nuisance. It means getting up in the dark, they say, but wait for a week or two. Life in the Spirit City, with its bustle and diu was too strenuous after li) years amidst the quiet solitudes of the Northland, and played such havor with his nervous system, that he could not stand the strain, so when his Se attle friends were not looking he packed htfr grip, stole away to the Admiral Watson, where he remained in hiding until the steamer was well out in the bay. Sam’s reception was such as would make any man proud, but his depart ure was quiet in the extreme. Sam looked after that part of it. Possibly the genial wharfinger at the Valdez Dock might have manag ed to stay in the city a few days long er, but one of his enterprising “friends” inserted the following no tice in a Seattle paper: WANTED:—Lady for housekeeper large hotel in Valdez, Alaska. When Sam came down to breakfast next morning there were long women, short women, fat women, Slim wom en, squatty women, tubby women, bloneds, near blondes, and pel oxide blondes; brunettes, flappers, chickens and squabs; in a line extending from the hotel desk down the street to the totem pole. Sam glanced at the smiling line of anxious applicants and rang the jing ler for full speed ahead. That is why he left Seattle amt why he returned to Valdez before our love for his memory cooled. No more Seattle for Sam. Nine teen more years may wax and wane but Sam will be here. He has had enough. A F FA IK FINE _ The vaudeville entertainment and | dance given by the Arctic Brotherhood on Saturday evening were both very successful. A larger number proonbly i never attended any affair in Seward. The vocal and instrumental items were mostly good. Indeed, one tould only praise and if one could not praise silence would be golden. How ever, the dancing was an unusual sort J of thing for Alaska. Miss Hallett is | wonderful and the four young ladies are worthy pupils. As their names were not mentioned on the program it must be said that they were the Misses Romig ami Misses Carlson. Seward Camp suggests again that A. B. stands for Always Best.
