SEWARD, ALASKA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1916 One thing Roosevelt must always he given credit for, and that is fighting against mollycoddleism. During his incumbency of the Presidency he was always a foe to the cheap pseudo-morality which some weak people regaid as the real thing. There is a type of person, more common to the United States than any other country, which con fuses babyism with purity. They believe that by spouting virtue they are virtuous, but the truth is that they lack manliness enough for manly vices. Mind, you, neithei Roosevelt nor anyone else taking that side of the question believes in vice. They probably abhor it more than the Pharisees, but they abhor the Pharisees more. The hypo crite is one who is careful to hide his vices but he probably {assesses more vices than the man he condemns, the only difference being that the vices of the hypocrite are of the sneak nature. There is nothing in the world better cal culated to turn real men against reform movements than the asinine mollycoddleism displayed by so-called reform ers. Xo matter how Roosevelt might be condemned today he must always be given credit for showing the real dif ference between men and Mollies. Ixt a town not very far away from Seward a weekly paper some time ago thought it correct, evidently, to at tack the private character of a man who is running lor office. This candidate is not one whom the Gateway would support but any newspaper should condemn the filthy statements made against him in print. If the candidate could be proven dishonest and unworthy of confidence it would be a different matter but the fault of which he was accused in public had no bearing on his ability or honesty. The people of Alaska should not permit themselves to tol erate any foul personalities of this kind. It is to be ad mitted that amongst our population are many who rather enjoy reading this personal abuse and the men who write it seem to think themselves clever because it is read and laughed at by the thoughtless. The continuance of such a practise would soon lower the manners of the whole territory. Villa was quoted some time ago as saying that he would take an important part in the election of a presi dent of the United States, and his operations around Chi huahua may be part of his Mephistophelian scheme. Judging by reports from outside one is led to think that the result is very uncertain. Wry little might cause a little disturbance that would shift a considerable body of votes from one side to the other and with the apparent eveness of things a very small body on a division might do the trick. Some act in Mexico or some failure to act in Mexico, some circustance that would fire the imagina tion in the United States at the eleventh hour, might exer cise a powerful influence. H. V. HOBEN A.
