The Valdez Prospector tells us that Delegate Wicker sham never said a word against the Alaska Road Com mission when he spoke at V aldez. Now, it the arguments against Colonel Richardson were good at Sew aid wh\ were they not good at Valdez? Surely the Delegate to. Congress from Alaska would not take into account a pos sible loss of votes if he thought it his duty to point out the sins of a public service commission. Does the failure to speak of the Commission in its home town suggest that after all the attacks on the demoniacal Colonel are de livered with a view to securing support in the ballot boxes? Sonte time ago this paper printed the report that Villa threatened to take a part in the United Suites presi dential election and now we have no less a person than the American secretary ot war declaring that the foes ot President Wilson are conspiring with Villa to make an at tack for election purposes. No matter w hat politics a man might have it is difficult to believe that any party or any I man could be guilty ot such treason as this. And yet Sec retary Baker says he has ample proof. Could there be such traitors outside of the ranks of Lucifer in Hell. We are sometimes inclined to be a little short-sighted when contemplating the meaning of the government rail road. Some of us actually incline to pessimism because the territory has not been opened to the limit during the very first year of construction work. We should always remember that the building of the government railroad is not the end in view; It is only a means to an end. All of us who have hit the trails for many years in the various parts of the territory know perfectly well that its re sources have only been touched on the outskirts. \\ her* ever there has been a means of transportation there you have found resources. The railroad will be as the Yukon river is to its own part of the territory, and the feeders which will come in time will be as the many tributaries of the Yukon—gateways to more treasure houses. Remem ber always that it is not the railroad but what the rail road will do. Remember also what Tommy Riggs said: Cut out the localism. l>e above the little things. Do not keep looking at your feet. Stand on an eminence and gaze out and beyond. The United States government has put its hand to the plough in Alaska and tis up to Alaskans to lend all the encouragement possible.
