As one of the winter pastimes watch some of the sup porters of Wickersham trying to wriggle out and prove themselves Democrats. It is easy to see now how false reports come about election results outside. It is caused by the system ol in venting votes to make one's candidate appear in the lead. Some time ago a petition was extensively signed and presented to the school board asking that the schools be opened once more on the old government time and each of the petitioners has now received a letter from the Board asking for the reason for signing such a petition. This can mean nothing else than that the parents must first show the Board their good faith in dealing with their own children. The coming of soldiers to the railroad country is a forward stop. The next will be the coming of marines to : the Seward naval station, let us hope. If any other great nation were building that railroad we should have had thousands of soldiers along the line of route long ago. The lack of soldiers hitherto is a proof of advanced civili zation. If Shakespeare had lived in one of these Alaska coast j towns he would most likely not have compared rain to j elm rit v. • There has been more work in Seward and the neigh- j borhood than people to do it for several months and yet J Seattle papers give publicity to begging stories from this j citv. Seward is, indeed, a much more favorable place to j took for work in than Seattle. But work isn’t everything, j If one could do without it so much the better. Work is of two kinds, the passive and active, to speak in the language of the grammarian, but, to indulge in paradox, the active work is the least active kind. To work is passive hut to j work someone else is active, although the very act of working in the passive sense suggests greater activity than is pleasant for many to contemplate. The present Dry wave shows us how evolution works itself out. We often wonder at many changes that occur red in the past. We wonder how the Pyramids were built j and we cannot explain why many ancient arts were allow ed to be lost. But we can now probably understand.' Posterity will read documents of this era and bemoan the’ lost gin-fiz7.es and cocktails. LOST Watch chain and nugget charm, valued as keepsake. Reward.
