Recent arrivals from Candle state that there is little doubt that Ken yon committed suicide owing to an unexplainable dread of making the trip from Candle to Nome overland. Friends of the deceased state that Kenyon had a very trying experience while crossing the peninsula several years ago and arrived in Candle in a very bad physical state. Since that time he has suffered with a veritable obsession regarding the overland trail. This peculiar delusion had obtaineo such a hold over the young1 man that lie decided to stay in Candle last winter rather than come to Norn* overland after the Silver Nl.ive ha< failed to reach Kotzebue sound last fall. Special Weekly Rate THE UKULELE Post-Intelligencer: It has become : apparent that a new musical inatru i ment, the ukulele, has invaded the American market with some promise ! of a permanent place in the public regard. Those who have not at tempted harmony upon it may have speculated upon its source. A. I*. Taylor, a correspondent of the fed eral department of commerce, has given some information on that point. The ukulele was first produced by a Portuguese at Honolulu, Hawaiian islands. It was a popular vehicle of music in the islands long before it in vaded the American market. The mainland public took to it readily, and now there is a demand far be yond the productive capacity. Mr. Taylor tells us that on Sep tember 1, 11)15, the ukulele factories of the islands were turning out 500 oi (500 instruments a month.. A year later the production had increased to 1,000 a month, and the orders from mainland music dealers were far from being all filled. Last month a com 1 pany was organized in Honolulu to manufacture 2,000 ukuleles a month The ukulele is made principally of the native koa wood. The peculiat tone produced is said to bo obtained only from well-seasoned koa wood, LOYAL OKDKR OF MOOSK Meets every Friday night at S o’clock, A. 1». Hall. M. Horner, F. R.
