DEC. 30, 1916. ; The simplest task in the world, apparently, is to jump in and “run" a newspaper in a small town. When you take up one of those little sheets you can see there is nothing to it—just to stick type together, put it in a form and on the press and run it olf. Some people can see clearly that the man \\ ho sets the type could edit the paper as he goes along. Just put his words into type as they come to him, and so on. Those ideas are what have got many people into the publishing business without any experience, only to make inevitable failures. Of course, writing in a news paper does not require very eminent literary qualities but literary qualities are only a very secondary consideration in newspaper work. To all people who lack enough ex perience notiiing seems more simple than the thing they know least about. They never, for instance, think that anything approaching a real newspaper, however small, has to be careful in almost every other line not to say something that might hurt someone. And you do not have to say anything against some persons. Right here in this town and in every other little town you must be careful not to say something nice about some person lest some other friend of vours. who is hostile to the other % one, might get sore at yourself. This is all only one of the little faults of human nature. It is natural to feel nurt when you hear an enemy praised, only a newspaper I as so many opportunities, therefore, to hurt and keep hurting if does not exercise particular care. Also with the mechanical and business ends of the newspaper there are things, dear friends, you do not understand if you i rve never tried the game, but it is no fault of yours. It i< the lack of experience which the newspaperman also lacks about your business, perhaps. As this is the last dav of the vear and a new one is % % about to begin let us talk about a little more shop. It may have seemed that this paper did not desire to aid something in which the children were interested. In the first place this paper was not consulted or asked. In the second place this is no country for this maudlin sentimen tality about “kiddies.” “poor wounded men" and “good fellows.” The man who reallv likes children would be the % last to use them bv trving to make them look like a lot of subjects for cheap charity, and the rest of the stuff is just as bad. The children of this community are all right. Anyone who could not like them should have his head ex ft amined, and their parents can give them all the good time that is good for them without someone else butting in to tell them how. This may be a satisfactory explanation for an apparent lack of interest.
