Shorthill. has publish«*d an article in a recent i>sue of ** l he New Republic dealing with the prohibition vote in the territory. The writer takes a very decided stand for Prohibition. He is the same man who tried to have the sale of liquor in the Elks Cluh at Juneau prohibited some time ago, and who got into a lot of trouble thereby. YOUTH IS FINED $3; MADE FISH DRUNK For making drunk fish in the Springville lake, a young man of Birmingham, Alabama was arrested recently and fined $;> by the mayor of the town, says the Birmingham Record. The fish lake at Springville is a show place. It is about a hundied feet square, two feet deep and has i\ cement inclosure. It contains thou sands of carp, varying in weight from half a pound to five pounds. They are quite tame and gather in ravenous, squirming masses whenever one feeds them. THE BANK Of SEWARD “THE BANK THAT HELPS YOU PROSPER.” TERRITORIAL DEPOSITORY CITY DEPOSITORY ESTABLISHED 1905 I HOLDINGS PLANNED IN NENANA CITY NENANA, Dec. 14.—A largo amount of building is being planned by the Alaska Engineering Com mission for Xenana this year—build ings to accommodate the increased volume of business that will be handled by the commission and the additional employes who will be en gaged as soon as work opens up in the spring. There will be constructed a large dock landing shed, J»00 feet in length, and three storage warehouses 60 by 104 feet. The warehouses will be two stories high and will be equipped with elevators. Additional mess and bunk houses will be built, and there will be a large club house, with dance hall, reading rooms, gymnasium and baths, i for the use of the employes of the commission free of cost. Several ad ditional cottages also will be needed, and the hospital building will be con siderably enlarged. Then there will be a roundhouse, with live engine stalls, and a new ma chine shop, equipped with tools suit able for making repairs to, or new parts for, any of the equipment or rolling stock that may become neces sary. The commission will also have a sawmill of its own, the equipment for which is already here. The plant will be operated by electricity and the mill waste, slabs, sawdust, etc., will be used as fuel at the power plant. The sites of the proposed buildings have not been selected as yet. The number of employees on the commission payroll in this division at the present time is approximately the same as it was on November 30. At that time there were 193 regular employees and 141 contractors, mak ing a total of 334. In last week’s issue of th<» News a typographical error made it appear that only 60 miles of clearing had been completed, whereas the right of way at the time the report was ren dered had been cleared for a distance of 87 miles. This is important since the additional 27 miles reduces the cost per mile very materially.—News. The past week holds the record for being the coldest, longest and most persistent spell of Arctic weather ex perienced here since Ruby sprang in i to life. There was an average tem perature of 55 below, with the lowest mark at 60. It was an absolute impossibility to do any teaming on the roads, as was instanced by the fact that a team of mules belonging to Joe Ferris died, their lungs being burnt by the keen cold while on route from Ruby to the creeks. William howler, arriving from Iditarod yesterday, lost one dog on the trail, the animal having frozen to death. Practically all mining operations in the vicinity had to cease because of the inability to obtain provisions and wood. i The day before yesterday, it was <2 • below at Birches, while the mail car rier says that when he left Kokrinc yesterday, it was having 65 below temperature. But today the cold snap has broken the thermometer registering 30 be low this morning.—Ruby Record, Pe< . 9. i c. zl C-' g g g g g g g g c. g g g g g g g g; g: g g g t EMPRESS THEATRE Sunday, Jan. 7 ™,° s"?”5 ~ ■ --...... - - - - - ■ - ■ ' ■■ M — ■— RATHE NEWS No. fil » " 1 ■ 1 • " DANIEL FROHMAN PRESENTS THE CELEBRATED INTERNA TIONAL STAR, GABBY DESLYS. and HARRY PILSER, in ‘HER TRIUMPH” A FAMOUS PLAYERS FEATURE in 4 PARTS. “A COAT’S TALE” I REEL KEYSTONE COMEDY MUTUAL MOVIE ADMISSION — — 10 & 25c Big Reductions in Holiday Goods i of every description for the next Ten Days SEWARD DRUG COMPANY SUCCESSORS TO THE ALASKA PHARMACY SEWARD ALASKA ^ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooococ LUMBER!
