SKWARD, ALASKA, SATURDAY, JANUARY (>, 1917 The people of the city are urged to make use ot the editorial columns “t this paper to express their views Mr. \\. M. Sauers of the Seward Commercial Company will start otT the work next Monday by request. People in business, those who understand something about in surance, about lire protection, about fisheries, about any th nc are in a far better position to speak of them than a person who might have a little smattering of several subjects but no real knowledge ot anything in particular, unless he carefully studied it. Almost every man has something to say worth while and now is the time to sa\ it. It is far better to give your own views than to criticize those of another. You might do a lot of good to the com munity and the least you can do is to get others thinking, which is a great advantage in itselt. on are asked to write editorials, not ordinary letters. In this way what von sav will he read in other towns and will he more at • • tractive to home readers also. If you feel the time hanging heavy on your hands, young ladies and gentlemen, during long winter evenings you might make it lighter and profitable by taking up some study. The person in these days who is without some special trade can never feel safe for a rainy day. You could choose shorthand, sewing, bookkeeping, engi neering or its elementary parts, cooking, carpentry, law and a score of others that might be useful some time. Convention is a terrible invention. There are times in some towns in w inter when a person is torn by a raven ous desire to let loose—to do something crazy. All that stays him is the thought of the eyes of the godly raised to heaven in shocked virtue and holy horror. There is noth ing so useful in a community as the saints of it. If the wheat were ever divided from the chad' and sent away from these towns what beautiful flights the lightened chaff might achieve. This is the time of the vear in Alaska when so manv % % pot pie can be heard swearing that this winter is their last sure and certain. Three months from now when the sun is shining and all the world looks bright Alaska will look just a little better than any other place to the man who has to work for a living. Many a man has gone out side after having been thoroughly saturated with the in dependent spirit of the North and he has yearned to come back, to get away from the cheap and numerous competi tion. from the semi-slaverv that is ever a concomitant or % so-called civilization.
