Recreation—
its Role Today
By
LOBENGULA MOSLEY
Recreation programs in the
various agencies, churches,
schools and parks must enlarge
the outlook of the people taking
part in such activities. The
skills and methods of how and
what to play must be carried
back to the homes and the fam
ily groups. The play spirit
should be. created to the extent
that such a spirit will make the
family life vital and harmonious.
Recreation must influence the
family group to play together.
Games taught on the play field
or in the indoor rooms, should
at all times stimulate the desire
to play in the back yard with
other members of the family.
Leaders in recreation must so
plan their programs that such
learning, as received while at
the agency, will be the basis
for home recreation. The fam
ily is the most important factor
in our society, therefore the
recreation leaders must extend
their services, to the extent
that they are sure that the
community people are playing
together as a family unit.
Every effort must be made
to keep the family together.
The greatest joy any child can
know is when father, mother

The Power of Man •<
Man’s mind is the potent
agent of creation. Man’s mind
has made the world as you see
it. Man’s mind has changed the
barren mountains; man’s mind
has changed the hills, the eter
nal prairie; even the Desert of
Sahara, into a blooming para
dise. Man’s mind has reared
upon the structure of a virgin
world a civilization that chal
lenges everything but God.
Man’s mind has made the world
a habitable heaven according to
his desire. Man’s mind has lift
ed him from a serf to the po
sition of master. Man s mind
has made him an emperor of
empires, has made him a king
of dominions. Man’s mind has
lifted him from the cave to the
palace, to the castle, to the
mansion. Man’s mind has sorted
him and taken him from the
other animals and made him
master of them all. Man’s mind
has caused him to give
up his nakedness in the wilder
ness and forests ■ where he ran
wild with the lion, the tiger,
the elephant and the deer, the
skakes, the birds, and the creep
ing things to find satisfaction
in a beautful hoem on the hill,
in his castle, in his Baronial
mansion.
Man’s mind does not rule the
universe, but it does rule the
world And if 400 million Negro
es of the world can realize that
and change their subjective,
slavish minds into independent
minds, with outlooks of their
own, views of their own, — if
■•black men will do that, the
world over in twenty-four hours
will be turned to us and a new
imperialism will be set up. Can
we change your mind from be
ing slaves, human underlings,
to becoming men—recognizing
the power divine—the power in
you?
MRS. ELINOR NEELY
Man, A Sovereign Lord
0, if I could impress black
humanity that in each of every
one of you is that resident
power of God, that absolute
power that cannot be challenged
by another animal because man
is God in part, and besides man
there is no God; because man,
in his creation, originally, is a
'part of 'God; and there is no
God without man. Therefore
man is a sovereign lord and the
master of his realm. Realize
that and your lives become dif
ferent, and you will be born
anew to see life in its fullness
and its abundance. May you
realize this truth; that upon you
absolutely as individuals and as
a collective whole rests the re
sponsibility of your age. O!
God forgive if I should lose
my balance in the world of men.
O, how could I, after realizing
that I am the son of God, how
could I so lose my balance as
to accept a master where there
is none but myself and my
God? My father and your father
because of their view, accepted
a master and they died handing
us a heritage of what? A heri
tage of sweat, blood, sorrow
and tears. -
