Congress which showed that giant branch banking systems do most of their business with giant cor porations. , “The two Chicago banks pushing branching aren’t con cerned in doing business with little people,” Carter said. “Their record shows no inter est in making mortgage loans, or VA loans, os doing I installment lending. They don’t even really want to es tablish branches to compete with existing banks. Their real objective is to swallow up existing banks, buy them up, convert them into branch es, and thereby reduce com petition and expand their hold on banking in the state.” The proponents for branch ing based their case on the contention that Illinois is laggng economically because branch banking is illegal. Paul G. Ceaser (D) of Ber wyn responded by declaring that per capita income in Illinois is among the highest in the nation and that its growth in 1962 led all mid western states. “Illinois is a great, dynam ic sate that ranks as one of the outstanding states, indus trially and economically, in the nation. This leadership was achieved under our pres ent system of community banking,” Ceaser said. “It just isn’t true that a more monopolistic system of branch banking would contribute to more economic growth in Illi nois.” William Pollack (R) of Chicago and Paul Powell (D) of Vienna were the prnciple spokesmen for the motion to non-concur which was intro duced by the bill’s principle sponsor, Paul Randolph (R) of Chicago. Their main contention was that the people should be per mitted to vote on the issue in a referendum. BABY SITTER—I will keep children in my home for working mothers in the day. 13628 Crawford.
