THE WORLD ARENA The London, England, liquor deal ers are clamoring for a reduction in government liquor tax. o o o The membership of the various total abstinence societies of Germany is now estimated at 200,482. 000 It is estimated that not less than 3,000,000 Africans die annually from the effects of drinking alcoholic liquors. u u u The South Wales Temperance As sociation is seeking to amend the ex isting laws with a view of placing further restrictions upon liquor selling on the Sabbath. o o o In the King of Sweden’s speech at the opening of the National Parlia ment, a bill was announced giving women full franchise and making them elegible for election to Parlia ment. o o o On January I, 1912, Iceland pro hibited* the importation of wine, beer and spirituous liquors throughout the Island. In three years the sale as well as the importation will be pro hibited. n n n The Sheffield, England, magistrates have declared in favor of closing the saloon at io p. m. instead of n p. m. and of fixing the opening hour at 6 a. m. instead of 5 a. m. as hereto fore. 000 In some of the licensing divisions of Wales, they have a public house (saloon) to eighty-four inhabitants. In one there are four saloons to 100 inhabitants. In others there are as few as one public house to 200 inhabitants. 000 The British Women’s Temperance Association is pushing the Sabbath closing movement. At a recent meet ing of the association, Lady Lawson asserted that the British were almost the last of the English-speaking races to take the subject up. V Prohibition has been progressing wonderfully in Canada. Prince Ed ward Island went “dry” in 1907. Nova Scotia (all but the city of Hali fax) in 1909. In Quebec about two thirds of the districts are without saloons. Newfoundland is without saloons save the city of St. Johns. In Manitoba, fifty-five out of a total of 107 are saloon-free. Ontario had 6,185 saloons in 1871, now with double the population only 1,793. The governor of Maine has called a special session of the legislature to begin March 20 to consider more juggling with the liquor laws of that state.
