We know something sweet about "Our Myrtle." vennor i-nys we will have a snow six feet deep this winter. Where is our "Notes by the Way" oorrespondent, "Archer?" Our people are highly pleased with the Local Option column in the Star. Don't forget the Odd Fellows' Oys ter Si pper Tuesday night, Dec. 26. For valuable information, read the a Ivertisement of Siium;ns' Liver Reg ulator. Our Sunday School will hold a Sing ing Service some night during the holidays. If you want to make a Christmas Gift, before buying look at the large display at J. W. Rhodes'. The ice harvest has commenced.— Several of our fanners have filled their ice houses with beautiful clear ice. It is hinted that some of our boys will organize a company of "Fantis tics" and visit a neighboring town on Christmas day. Go to Timberlake, Stickley & Guyer for your Christmas presents. Also, for the "solid comforts" and necessa ries which they always keep on hand in abundance. Copal varnish applied to the soles of shoes, and as it dries till the pores are filled asd the surface shines like polished mahogany, it will make the soles waterproof, and last as long as the uppers. Don't fail to call on H. W. Clowe, Jr., 92 Main street, Winchester, for your Christmas Presents. He has some of the prettiest and cheapest Jewelry ever brought into the Valley, and it is going oil like hot cakes. Farmers and others desiring a gen teel, lucrative agency business, by which $5 to $20 a clay can be earned, Bend address at once, on postal, to H. C. Now make your visits. Those morose individuals who as sert that there is no true happiness in this world should take a glance at the faces of the oliildreu as they are gaz ing at the many pretty Christmas toys &c, displayed in the several stores in town. Health journals are now asserting that to maintain a sound constitution yon should lie only on the rigiit side. The health journals may mean well enough, but what are you going to do if you are editing a Readjuster news paper ? Men who hoard every dollar they get, who never spend a cent to aid in Building up the town in which they live, and wnqsihrow every obstacle in the way of those who are progressive, ue a curse to the community in which ■ bey live. Stand by your friends, let come what may, through good and evil re port, is a goad motto. If you do not, you need not expect them to stand by yuii. So, whether they are friends of a high or low degree, in affluence or in poverty, stick to them, don't ask ! whether it wdl be popular. When ever you prove traitor to those who ha.c -tood up for and helped you bat tle against the world, you will find yourself without any one to console you in mi evil hour, when misfortunes come thick and fast. A true friend is a jewei that should be worn next to the heart, md that man or woman's goo ! sho ild always be uppermost in your mind. .1 I I II Peaise Him. Olin Larrick has returned home from a trip to the mountains of West Virginia. I , We hear that Santa Claus will make our £ place a visit on Monday night next. t Middletown will be honored with the I ' presence of some of our former citizens dur- 1 ing the holidays. I *.«•» * Fun at Home.—Do not be afraid r of a little fun at home Do not shut c up your houses lest the sun should fade your carpets, and your hearts, lest a laugh should shake down a few musty i old cobwebs that are hanging there. — r Young people must have fun and re- c laxation somewhere ;if they do not i find it at their hearthstones they will s seek it at other and less profitable 1 places. Therefore let the tire burn i brightly at night in winter, and let the t doors and windows be cheerfully 1 thrown open in summer, and make I home delightful with all those little r. arts that parents so well understand. ] Do not repress the buoyant spirit of a your children. Half an hour's merri- '. merit within doors, and merriment at home, blots the remembrance of many I a care and annoyance during the day; and the best safeguard they can take with them into the world is the tin- c seen influence of the bright little home ' sanctum. ' Something New.—An enterprising 1 individual in Philadelphia has started { a novel business, from which he ex- \ pects to make a great deal of money. \ It is a "professional escort bureau," at c which lornlone females can secure es- 1 corts for an evening at a moderate t price. All that is required of the at- i taohea of this bureau is that they give 1 unexceptional references; are sober, t good looking, well educated, and of c captivating address. They will, of t course, have to know how to sing, pit and recite, so as to be entertaining as well as good mannered. All langua ges will flow easily from their glib £ tongues, while in the matter of dress I they will follow the latest Parisian s .styles, and no doubt set the fashions t in the city. No badge nor "decora- f tion" will expose to the cruel world 1 their true position—none will know « this but their employers. . sHsS>s» 1 Mirthful Children.—A very 1 small matter will arouse the mirth of c a child. How still the house is when s the little ones are fast asleep and their c pattering feet are silent! How easily ihe fun of a child bubbles forth!— t lake even • those poor prematurely i aged little ones, bred in the gutter, t cramped in unhealthy homes, and ill- i used, it may be by drunken parents, . and you will find that the child's na- i ture is not all crushed out. They are gleeful children still, albeit, they look ' so haggard and weary. Try to excite their mirthfuliiess.and ere. long a laugh 1 rings out. as wild and free as if there c was no such thing as sorrow in the ] world. Let the dear little ones laugh, t then. Do not try to check or silence t I them, but let their gleefulness ring f out a gladsome peal, reminding us i when we too could laugh without a l sigh, and sing without tears. | «sse».» j A $20.00 Bible Reward. ; The publishers of Rutledge's Month- j c ly offer twelve valuable rewards inn their Monthly for January, among I I which is the following: f We will give $20.00 in gold to the i person telling us how many verses \ there are in the New Testament Scrip tures (not the New Revision) contain- I ing bat two words each, by January i 10th, 1883. Do not forget the meeting of the [ Executive Committee on the 10th prox. The Local Committee will look lor you. The Virginia Conference of the M. j E. Church South passed resolutions concurring in the Local Option move ment of the State. Certainly a Moth- j odist body should do nothing else. — ■ Rev. Dr. Andrews, of Shepherdstown, 1 once said to us, "Methodist minhtersl are ex-ofiicio temperance men." We see that fl. H. Chatters, of Fredericksburg, Va., has been elected j General Superintendent of Juvenile; Templars of this State. Pie makes a strong appeal to the Christian women ; of our State to help save the children. I What say you, women of Frederick? Can we Dot have some Juvenile Tem plars m our county ? Third Q.r utterly Mekting of Ex- BCUIIVE Committee. The ( ounty Executive Committee will rnce„ in Stephens City on Tuesday, 16th of January, 1883. The meeting Will open at 11 A. ML There will be addresses during the day by ministers and others, and Rev. Dr. White, of Winches-er, will address the Commit tee and citizens at night. Let all the ministers of the county attend this meeting.' There will be arrangements made to accommodate those who will stay all night. Fate of the Liquor Traffic. — As Demetrius, the silversmith, raised no small stir among the workmen be cause he said the craft by which they made their wealth was in danger to be set at naught, so the liquor dealers have raised no small stir because they are in danger of losing the gains of the people. But this temple which has been erected cemented by the blood and tears of suffering humanity, must fall, as did the great temple of Diana at Ephesus, before civilization and Christianity.—W. J. Sykes, in Tennessee Good Templar. Beware of the Abuses of the Christmas Festivities. We profess to observe this season in commemoration of the birth of the Saviour of men. Who dares to con tribute to the death and ruin of men ? This work is not all done by saloon keepers. Private individuals, and es pecially that vast army of persons who give wines, &c, to their friends who call upon them during the holi days. Hear God's word : "Woe unto him that giveth his neighbor drink; that p.ittest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also." —Hab. 2: 15. How often men who are trying to .jv.it, the v have the old fires rekin dle ' c careful, good people, lest this curse of tho Lord rests on you. The Liquor-Dealers' Platform. The New York Retailer, liquor-or gan, says: "Our platform for the im pending conflict is a simple one. We shall he outspoken first, last and all the time, for candidates whoarepledg ed to benefit the retailers of this State, if they are elected to office. Be he Republican or Democrat, any candi date who will pledge himself to do all in his power to change the shameful laws that oppress the liquor dealers of this city and State at the next ses sion of the Ltgislature, shall receive our earnest support." This is our platform exactly, except that, instead of "for candidates who are pledged to benefit the retail deal ers, we would insert candidates who are pledged to "down with the enemy" —old King Alcohol, especially as he rules through the "retailers." Who Furnish All the Whiskey? These are men like ourselves—with bodies and souls-—both of which are of inestimable value ; and yet all the noble powers of these men are prosti tuted to do what? To kill their fel low-men ! And shall we who it stand off and never raise our voices to prevent it? Dr. A. G. Hay good, of I Georgia, tells us, as hd quotes from Commissioner Raum's Report of In ternal Revenue for 1879: "There are 5,444 distilleries; 4,252 wholesale dealer! and a great army of retailers who Sr il to consumers. It is enough to take one's breath —this army with screens instead of banners. There are, Mr. Baum tells us, in this nation, 155,85.1 retailers." Let ns add up a little: Only 165, --54G of our people licensed lo murder our c tizens. In this calculation there is no count of the many in the employ of those who are the heads at the bus iness. John Wesley said, more than a hundred years ago, "Liquor sellers are poisoners generally. They mur der His Majesty's subjei ts by whole sale. Neither does their eye pity or spare. Their gain is the blood of the people." In the name of His Majesty let us stop it. A walk through the streets any of these cold days will show that a great many persons who visit our town are not prudent and humane enough to blanket their horses while standing. A merciful man is always kind to his beast. Aside from the mere humanity of the act, however, their beasts are kept in better condition for the pre ' caution, and give their owners greater j service. Now is the time to commence form- I i"S g"°d resolutions for the new year. I CHRISTMAS !
