P. N. Temperance Mass Meeting. There will be a Temperance Mass Meeting in the Market Street Metho dist Church in Winchester next Tues day night. Two eminent speakers, members of the Methodist Conference to meet iv that church, will address the meeting. Goal! who can. One ot these speakers is from Washington, j : the other from Baltimore, and they will tell us how the work is going on in those great cities. Hon. W? W Berry. | J This gentleman, on last Friday! night, in the Methodist church in this! place, addressed a good audience of; interested people on the subject of! Temperance. He is the G. W. C. T. ' jof tlie Order of Good | Templars in this State, and was ex-1 pected to bring forward prominently (the claims of the order, but his re- ' marks took amc re general scope. In , ; his introduction he referred to the! 1 large amount of money expended <br , whiskey in the State, and said that ! enough had been wasted in this article |to have bought all the railroads that : 1 hud been sold in Virginia three times '. over. In the last decode enough had j , been spent to pay our entire State debt!' three times over. He addressed the i t ! Christian people as to their duty in i - : this matter. He dwelt upon the ne- i i cnssity of educating our children in the public schools as to the nature of alcohol. While he did not ignore the great and good work his order had I done, and is doing, he heartily greeted ' all workers in this noble cause. He| promised us also to give a week or BO - next summer to Local Option in this county. He is a pure, chaste and im pressive speaker, just such an one as _ the trustees in churches can safely ' trust in their places of sacred wor ship, i etesearwm * I Personal Liberty. ' A great deal is t-aid about destroy ing people's rights. We learn that a few days ago in the Northern portion of this county three young men, under the influence of whiskey, rode tip to ' a man's house and told him they had i was the meanest man in the county, and they had made a wager about getting Hipper at his house, de-1 , miinding at the same time that he | i Bhottld provide them a meal. He told I' them to leave his premises ; then one ! | drew a pistol, swearing he would kill ;! him. One i f the ladies present faint-! i ed, and the others succeeded in get-;' ting them to leave. They went a lit- j ( tie further, and were passing a young ; I lady alighting from a horse, under', which was a dog, when they fi ed three .' shots at the dog. Fortunately for the | young lady the horse was acoustomed ' to the report of fire arms. , This is what some call personal lib- j' erty. We are glad there is another side to this personal liberty. We are at liberty to protect ourselves against all such lawlessness. It may be these parties were going ftom a large sale in ; i this county. We also learn that there ! one man took the liberty to stab an other ; another took the liberty to j draw a pistol "on his fellow—all of j them having taken the liberty to get , j drunk. assapass Joint Meeting in Winchester. t The County Executive Committee, together with Winchester Alliance, j met as appointed in a class-room of: the M. E. church in Winchester. A J good delegation of both committees r ' was present, and the meeting very:' harmonious. Rev. Mr. France was | happy in his effort to lead the senti- j ment of the meeting in the very best . channel. Alter a free exchange of j opinions, the following resolution was! ~ offered and adopted : ! fl Resolved, That we recommend to 1 , 1 all people, regardless of political par-1 1, ty, who are interested in Local Option, | li that they vote for no man who will j c ! not pledge himself to do all he can to j j secure a special Local Option bill for ! this county sit the next Legislature of j j Virginia." This refers, of course, to candidates ; j for the next Legislature. It was also ; « ! resolved to appoint a committee ofjL five to prepare an address to the peo ple of the county to be published in ! r the county pipers. j c, Rev. Dr. White and 0. M. Brown, | p of Winchester, and D. W. Bronson, J. f, B. Larriek and Rev. Wm. Hodgson, of » the county, were appointed on that ( ( committee. There was but one pur- Jj pose manifest on the part of all pres ent; the purpose simply to remove the drink temptation from our people. Who will not help do this? If saloon pj keepers themselves could get rid of ' J ii- i .i , .I in I money - blindness, even they woulct j - tc | help. «] The present appearance of the grow- °' ing wheat shows that the apprehen- jnt sions of farmers a few weeks ago were * not well founded. We learn fromgood „j autority that the crop, in this county, at least, looks fully as well as it usual-1 ly does at this season of the year. — | Winchester Times. They have opened a path for - many a young man who but for their - help would never have attained suc cess in life. But there are some de- i fects in our American life which the t common schools do not remedy, which, > in fact, it sometimes aggravates. A ' great many young Americans are now t growing up with a contempt for labor, j, The old apprenticeship system has | ( fallen into abeyance. Not only do • many foolish parents encourage their , children to look contemptuously on honest labor, but many boys who are honestly anxious to become mechanics I' find no avenue open whereby they * can gratify their desire.
