Page Two Louis Marshall: Jewish Leader-Ten Years After BY HENRY W. LEVY EDITOR’S NOTE: Here is a comprehensive review of the brilliant and useful career of Louis Marshall, beloved leader of American Jewry and cham pion of all minorities, whose tenth “yahrzeit” is being com memorated this month. Ten years have passed since that sorrowful day, September 11, 1929, when w r ord came from Zurich of the death of Louis Mar shall. The great Jewish leader, unquestionably the most beloved and respected in the annals of American Jewry, died shortly af ter the completion of his labors in behalf of the establishment of the enlarged Jewish Agency for Pal estine. To commemorate the tenth “yahrzeit” of his passing, a group of Jewish leaders made a pilgrim age to his grave in the Salem Fields Cemetery, New York. Rep resentatives of every outstanding Jewish organization in the metrop olis and Jewish leaders of every variety of opinion were among those who answered the call issued jointly by the Congregation Emanu-El of New York City, the American Jewish Committee and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. All Jewry turned out to do homage to Mr. Marshall. Zionists rubbed elbows with non-Zionists; Reform Jews exchanged Marshall anecdotes with their Orthodox brethren; Yiddishists and Hebra ists forgot any and all differences. For Louis Marshall, more than any other Jewish leader before or since, belonged to all Jewry. Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of both the American Jewish Com mittee and the Jewish Theological Society, organizations which were so much a part of Mr. Marshall’s life, has written of him: SHOP and SAVE AT Setzer’s STORES The Largest Stock of Used PLUMBING SUPPLIES In The South Wholesale and Retail SID MACK CO. 2350 W. He saw no incongruity in being president of Temple Emanu-El and chair man of the board of the Jewish Theological Seminary—he was a true liberal, respecting every man’s opinion, the actual embod iment of Schecter’s happy phrase, Catholic Israel.” Ten years after his death, the friends and admirers of Louis Marshall can hardly realize that it is so long since he completed his mortal span. It is a decade, though, in which he has been sorely missed; a decade momen tous in Jewish history. Because of his wide interests, and because he had so strong a hold on the masses, no one man has been able to succeed to his eminence and prestige. Mr. Marshall died at the height of his prestige. He had just played a leading part in the cre ation of the enlarged Jewish Agency for Palestine, that body which united all Jews —Zionists and non-Zionists —for the develop ment of Palestine. He died while America was enjoying the peak of its prosperity, just a few short weeks before the break in the stock market that was to lead us to years of economic depression. He was spared the Palestine riots that followed shortly after his death, and little did he dream of the Nazism that was to destroy German Jewry. Louis Marshall would have loved to live this past decade; he would have loved to meet the challenge that the years brought with them. And Jewry, many times cried out for the leadership of Mr. Marshall. Many has been the time’ these past years when speakers sought to impress audiences by telling them what Louis Marshall would have done. i Strangely, though, there was no man in American Jewry who could truly speak for Mr. Marshall; | there was no man who could 1 rationalize the Marshall approach because this peerless leader met difficulties in terms of humanita rianism rather than ideology. His concern was all Jewry, and though he gave of himself to each and every wholesome manifestation of Judaism, he never lost sight of the greater glory of Israel in his de votion to any particular Jewish philosophy. Mr. Marshall w r as an attorney, one of the greatest constitutional lawyers in the' history of the Unit !ed States. He was a man of re ligion, the president of the Congre gation Emanu-El (Reform) and | the chairman of the board of di ! rectors of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (Conserva j tive). He was of German extrac tion, but one of the greatest friends of the East European Jew. He was technically a non- Zionist although he played a most significant part in the creation of ! the enlarged Jewish Agency for Palestine, still the supreme Jew ish authority for Palestine. I Mr. Marshall had a passionate devotion to American constitu tional procedure. He fought for the Negroes and Catholics as well as the Jews when their rights were denied. He fought for mi norities of all kinds though he never conceded that there should be so much as a thought of guar anteed rights for minority groups in the United States. Mr. Mar shall subscribed to the promise THE SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY . - ——■ Refitiou* New* Service YOU WOULDN'T RECOGNIZE HIM that all people were born as in dividuals, free and with equal rights. He defended this thesis at every opportunity. One cannot recall the memory of Louis Marshall without think ing of many specific issues asso ciated with his name. He was a leader in the fight that resulted in the retraction of the anti-Jewish lies published in Henry Ford’s “ Dearborn Independent. ” He fought a long and brilliant battle in the United States House of Representatives and Senate that finally resulted in the abrogation of the Treaty of 1832 with Russia because of Russia’s refusal to rec ogni& American passports when held by Jews. He was one of the prime movers in the organization of the American Jewish Relief Committee, the precursor of the Joint Distribution Committee. He led the Jewish delegation at the Versailles Peace Conference that guaranteed minority rights to Jews in the newly established post-war countries. He was zeal ous of the use of the word “Jewish” and fought such petty politicians who formed “Jewish Republican” and “Jewish Demo cratic” organizations to further partisan ends.
