Page Two Facing Facts _ Especially wqtten for The South ern Jewish Weekly by Maurice Lawrence, Griffin, Ga. Two days after reading the news item in The Southern Jew ish Weekly regarding the deplor able condition under the article “Circumcision Banned.” January 5 issue, I was invited to a “simcha”. A very close friend had been blessed with an addition ; to the family. God. in His wis dom, had blessed this couple with a boy. It is only natural that the family was elated over the addi tion. and never before had I wish ed anybody ’Mazeltov”, wondering whether words of sympathy would not have been more appro- j priate. After staying a reason able length of time and paying my respects to the family I left thinking about this little “bundle from Heaven”. With the article fresh in my mind. I could not help but think. “Little Man, What Now?” I could see a mental picture of this baby growing up with a group of children the same age, happy and carefree until he reaches the age of about 6. At that age will come the first part ing of the ways from his friends and the first realization that he is “different.” The child’s parents live in a small town, about 65 miles from the nearest city. Incidentally, they are the only Jewish family in <♦> «5- «cm : ICE CREAM I 10c PINT EVERETT’S j 804 Main Street W >SB» >:<&«>>:.<♦> «• w STOKES’ Times Restaurant OPEN ALL NITE 204 Pearl St. Merck Drug Co. 223-25 Main at Monroe Phone 5-3217 Open All Site Oine at BERNEY’S RESTAURANT 'or Jacksonville's finest food <«• <«• <«* <«• - BONO CLEANERS and DYERS WE CALL AND DELIVER &.11 Garments Fully Protected By Insurance Phone 3-0254 1005 Forest St. CALL L & L Freight Lines Jacksonville 5-2095 West Palm Beach 2-0212 Miami 2-8484 Atlanta WA-8933 SANDWICH INN MAIN AT 37TH PARK AT GILMORE MIAMI ROAD IN SO. It is, therefore, only natural that the child’s friends will be of different faiths. The little barrier that seemed so small and insignificant during infancy will grow and grow’ as he gets older until it will be impossible to cross it. At the early age of 6. his friends will start going to Sunday School. He will then learn that he can not go with them, because he is a Jew. The child will not know what it is all about He goes to school with them, he plays with them, he eats with them, —in fact they have a lot of fun together like all children do. The other children are well mannered and of the same social standing as he. About that time the parents will start thinking about the boy’s future, wondering whether they should stay in this small town where they have been for a num ber of years and have made a comfortable living,—or should they sacrifice their economic se curity by moving to a city in or der to give their child the relig ious training they would like him to have ? The father will feel that he has a duty to his child: that of providing for him. He might even go so far as to ques tion himself as to whether he had the right to bring a child into the world while living in a small town, and by that forego the joy and pleasure that any child brings to parents. However, after much debating pro and con, he will probably decide to stay where he is and take the child to Sunday School in the city, thus traveling 130 miles each Sunday. As the child goes through pub lic school he will be taught the advances of science. This will conflict with his religious train ing. He will be taught to reason, while his religion is not open to reasoning, he must accept it as it is. He will be taught good citi zenship and honesty: he will also learn about the Bid of Rights— that in the eyes of the law all men are equal. His first sense of guilt will be when he is taught that Saturday is the Sabbath and a day of rest. BRENTWOOD FOR THE FINEST IN SPORTSWEAR At yoor favorite men’s shop WHY suffer from Colds? Cohen. Cincin nati. honorary president; Judge I. M. Golden, of San Francisco; Louis Fabricant of New York and Archiband Marx of New Orleans, This will conflict with his entire setup, as he knows that it is im possible for him to observe that day, and the teacher should know that it was too much to ask or expect. Being young, immature, and having a conscience, he will naturally feel like a sinner, through no fault of his own. When he drives to the city to at tend services on a holiday, instead of parking his car in a convenient place in front of the Shule door, he will have to park it on a side street a couple of blocks away, as if he were guilty of a crime. Instead of being commended for driving 130 miles in order to at tend services, he will be condemn ed for driving on a holiday. He will naturally get the feeling that perhaps he is not such a “good Jew.” He will also be aware that he has made more effort than anyone present in Shule to learn the little that he knows. How ever. that will not be recognized, as there is no compromise. In stead of developing the good qual ities. he is being impressed with his faults. All this time the boy will be growing away from the children with whom he grew up and those that will be his future neighbors and associates. The ease and comfort that he once enjoyed in their environment will be a thing of the past; discussions will be limited to certain subjects. In the eyes of the Gentiles he will always be regarded as a Jew, and in the eyes of the Jews he will be regarded as ignorant. Since he is a normal child, his scholastic average in school on all subjects good, he will wonder | why the subject that is to play a great part in his life is lacking, while all his life he has made such an effort and sacrifice to learn. And so,—another lost soul is produced into the world, all be cause the leaders in the present generation close their eyes to re alities and do not attempt a plan of action whereby the spiritual and religious life will harmonize with Americanism.
