WEEKLY SERVING AMERICAN CITIZENS \__ THE OLDEST AND MOST WIDELY CIRCULATED JEWISH^PUBLICATION IN THIS TERRITORY VOL. 15 No. 33 Week In Review By MILTON SHOWN. J.T.A. THE CRUSHING OF FRANCE The deep shadow of Nazism has fallen over another half million Jews as France, the great bul wark of the democracies in Wes tern Europe, lies quivering under Hitler’s heel. German refugees and French Jews who fell into the hands of the rapidly - advancing German armies were in mortal terror. As the Nazis consolidated their con trol over Paris, thousands of Reich, Austrian, Czech and Polish refugees who had not been able to escape from the capital sought to hide in the woods near the city or wherever they could find refuge, knowing what fate await ed them if they fell into the Nazis’ hands. Heinrich Himmler, Gestapo chief, assumed supervision of the German police in Paris, leading to the expectation that he would use the time-dishonored Gestapo methods employed i n Vienna, Prague and Warsaw, including an ti-Jewish terrorism. Young Herschel Grynszpan, who assassinated a German Embassy official in Paris two years ago be cause of what he had suffered in Germany, was reported to be in the hands of the Nazis again. He was said to be in a Paris jail when the Germans occupied the city and it was reported that he would be “tried’’ by the German authori ties. There are approximately 70,000 German Jewish refugees in France, as well as 350,000 to 400,- 000 resident Jews. Many of them succeeded in reaching southern France, but in this- refugee crammed area the Jews were stUl not safe. Some Jewish reUef lead ers managed to reach Lisbon. But some 400,000 Jews have been made refugees, added to a flood for which there are fewer and fewer outlets as anti-alien hysteria mounts. And, of even greater significance, Hitlerism has made another great advance which will have repercussions throughout the world. 'VAR in THE MEDITER RANEAN "* t h the situation grave in Western Europe, Lieut.-Gen. Geo. ■’ Giffard, British commanding office in Palestine, broadcast a message of encouragement to the **oly Land’s population. Britain as fought and won “many splen vvars” singlehanded, he said. Coughlin’s Social Justice resumes a distinct anti-Semitic character after having more or less played down the Jewish issue in recent weeks. The general tenor of the edition is identification of the Jews and “international bankers’’ with Government defense plans and the movement to aid the Al lies. One article speaks of the New Deal, “upon whose brow destiny has woven the bay leaves of Mo saic deliverance.” Another item speaks of “the Rothschild clan” as meeting in Paris to discuss the affairs of the Suez Canal and pre dicts that they will seek refuge in the United States rather than don uniforms and fight the Ger mans. The Rev. Leon Birkhead, national director of the Friends of Democracy, is called a “Gentile Jew.” An editorial is devoted to in timating that the United States, although she mitigated her “im migration laws to receive the wandering Jew,” is not equally interested in British, Belgian and French children. Another editor ial is given over to denouncing Rabbi Stephen S. Wise as an “erstwhile public consorter with Reds.” 600 A. Z. A.’s Attend Camp PENINSULA, Ohio —Six hun dred delegates, representing the 10,000 members of Aleph Zadik Aleph, B’nai B’rith’s youth organ ization, are converging on this Ohio town from every state in the Union by every conceivable sort of conveyance for the 17th an nual national convention of the largest Jewish boys organization in the country, which will be held at Camp Manatoc from June 28th to July sth. The boys, who range THE RED CROSS Our readers throughout the South are urged to support wholeheartedly the campaign of the American Red Cross in its public bid for funds to carry on a war relief program in Europe. In this dark hour in world history in which Hitler’s ter ritorial ambitions have left millions of innocent men, women, and children sick, torn, hungry and homeless, and in dire need of immediate assistance, let us open our hearts and give substantially to relieve the suffering of these stricken people. We who love our America so deeply—we who under stand so well what it means to suffer unjust cruelties—will want to help, while we are still in a position to do so. So in the name of humanity, GIVE freely to the Amer ican Red Cross. Let’s thank God we can give TO the Red Cross, instead of looking to the Red Cross for help. A WARNING... Beware of the “patriot” who promises to save you and vour country from the Jews and Communism. Adolph Hit ler made that promise—and found enough credulous souls to enable him to steal a number of countries and to make a treaty with the Communists. Today s struggle is a battle of Civilization against Totalitarianism (of whatever brand), and only the enemies of Civilization seek to stir hostility against Jews or Protestants or Catholics. JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, FRIDAY. JUNE 28, 1940 Jews Honor Catholic Priest gpN Rabbi Max Zucker (left) deUv ers B’nai B’rith’s message to Father Dunne. Several months ago, Father William V. Dunne, of Passaic, N. J., risked his life trying to save a Torah from Temple Emanuel, which was ablaze. In appreciation, District No. 4, B’nai B’rith’s area comprising all of the Pacific Coast states, appro priated a sum as a cash contribu tion to the Mount Carmel Guild, a charity they discovered was close to Father Dunne’s heart, and of which he is Moderator. In addition, the presidents of all B’nai B’rith lodges in San Francisco, in behalf of the Jewish community there, sent Father Dunne the following letter: “In an age when so many of the children of men have turned their faces from God and are pursuing hatred, falsehood and strife, your act of sanctification bears wit ness that God created man in His image and that His command that we love one another has not per ished from the earth. . . May the day not be distant when brother hood and love such as you have exemplified will fill the earth even as the waters cover the sea.” in age from 15 to 21, are coming by train, plane, automobile, bus, and hitch-hiking from more than 300 different communities. Refugees In France Are Seized by Nazis JEWS FLEE COUNTRY LONDON (JTA) —Thousands of German Jewish refu gees who had not been able to flee from France and those in the French colonies were in danger this week of being turned over to the Reich under the terms of the crushing ar mistice agreement, which provides for surrender of the French fleet, disarmament of the French army and Nazi occupation of more than half of France. i Germany’s power to demand ; any German subjects it desires is stated in Article XIX of the armistice agreement, which says: . . The French Government is to hand over all German subjects indicated by the German Govern ment who are in France or French overseas territory.” How many of France’s 400,000 Jews and 42,000 German refugees remained in the country was im possible to ascertain since there nad been an exodus during the week between Premier Henri Phil lippe Petain’s request for an ar mistice and the signing of the agreement. Refugees were reported to be pouring across the Spanish bor der in disorderly flight. Baron Eu gene de Rothschild of Paris, with only five centimes on his person, was said to be among a group which arrived at San Sebastian. Another member of the famous banking family, Baron Robert de Rothschild, philanthropist and a leader in refugee aid in Paris, ar rived in England, himself now a refugee. He had joined the French army last September. Baron Robert, together with Henri Bernstein, the playwright, were among 1,300 persons who made the voyage from a Biscayne port aboard a small ship which normally carries 180 passengers. Negotiations with the British and French Governments have been in progress since the outbreak of the war, he said. The proposed army would be composed of refugee and stateless Jews, Palestinian Jews and vol unteers from neutral countries, Jabotinsky said. The effect of cre ation of such an army, he de clared, would be to upset the “ridiculous whispering campaign” that Jews wanted others to fight in their interests but themselves remained at home. Col. J. H. Patterson, comman der of the Jewish battalions in Palestine in the World War, voiced high praise of the Jewish soldiers he led. The American Friends of a Jewish Palestine, at its first annual convention, adopt ed a resolution urging Britain to accept the offer of the Irgun Ze vai Leumi, Zionist - Revisionist youth organization in Palestine, to relieve British forces for serv ice elsewhere.
