Cooperation of
Christians and Jews
i
By ROBERT A. ASHWORTH
Brotherhood Week, observed annually during the week
of Washington’s birthday, is designed to promote the princi
ples of justice, good will, understanding and cooperation
among those of the Anglican, Evangelical Protestant, Jewish,
Mormon, Quaker and Roman Catholic cultures in America.
It is sponsored by the National Conference of Christians and
Jews. f ~
The conspiracies of the totali
tarian dictators against free peo
ples make the observance of Bro
therhood Week more than a mere
demonstration of sentiment. It is
an essential measure in the defense
of the American way of life.
It is perfectly clear that the
dictators seek the breakdown of
brotherhood, understanding and
confidence and the substitution of
distrust, intrigue and hate. To en
sure the democratic process in the
United States, education of youth
and adults to the principles of
Brotherhood is a “must.”
“Make America Safe for Differ
ences,” the slogan for Brother
hood Week, symbolizes a determi
nation to resist all totalitarian ide
ologies and propaganda of hatred
and strife. America is a nation of
many peoples and religions. Ev

ery such group has made distinc
tive contributions to the wealth
and the civilization of the nation.
Variety is a source of strength,
not of weakness. Yet emotional
appeals are made to Catholics,
Jews and Protestants to distrust
and hate each other by those who
would be tyrants over all.
The basic purpose of Brother
hood Week is to unite citizens of
all cultures in the determination
that America shall be kept free
from the suicidal animosities dis
figuring the common life in other
parts of the world today. Justice
and equal opportunity for all shall
be maintained as the true Ameri
can tradition, embodying the Am
erican dream.
An uncompromising warfare of
ideals is going on in our genera
tion. We are confronted by those
who assert that brute force is the
only final arbiter in the affairs of
men. Those who believe in the
brotherhood of man under the fa
therhood of God now must stand
together. All who love our nation
must set themselves to the solu
tion of our moral and social prob
lems by cooperative study,’ expe
rimentation and action within the
orderly processes of consent and
law.
Whatever threatens the liber
ties of any of our citizens threat
ens all. Men may differ in their
conscientious convictions, yet re
spect the sincerity with which
they are held and stand together
as Americans. No hostile influ
ence from without can destroy a
nation whose members are knit
together by understanding and
mutual esteem and from which
hatred, suspicion and fear are
barred.
In the United States we are ex
perimenting in the direction of
the possibility of a society in
which can be maintained a parity
of the different, a democracy of
cultures, a kind of cultural plur
alism.
Some people are frightened by
that concept, fearful that differ
ences will be stressed and unity
ignored. To recognize, however,
that American civilization is ac
tually composed of a plural num
ber of cultures is merely to be
realistic.

LET US UNITE HERF
the Old World cultures brought to
our shores by the sons and daugh
ters of many nations have stimu
lated and enriched every aspect
of American life. The concept of
America as a melting pot is out
moded since it disregards the per
sistence and importance of differ
ences. Science has shown that di
versity is nature’s way of ensur
ing life and strength. Applied to
society this principle would mean
that variety is to be appreciated
and 1 used. Members of all culture
groups will have then a sense of
security and dignity. The values
which they cherish take on new
meaning because they are incor
porated in the developing culture
of a dynamic society. Education,
therefore, will use all of its re
sources to teach Americans to live
satisfactorily in a culturally plur
alistic society.
The United States has been lik
ened to a symphony orchestra, the
numerous religious cultures, ra
cial strains and national traditions
being comparable to the various
instruments. Just as each type of
instrument has a distinctive part
and blends into the whole so the
groups of the nation contribute
distinctive features to the ensem
ble of American civilization, Bro
therhood Week, February 22 to 28,
is a time to extend appreciation of
this fact.
In endorsing the observance of
Brotherhood Week, President
Franklin D. Roosevelt has written
to the National Conference of
Christians and Jews:
“With reverent dependence up
on God and faith in our destiny as
a people, let us meet in church and
school, in cathedral and syna
gogue, in public hall and home,
during the week of Washington’s
Birthday, to purge our hearts of
all intolerance and to bind our cit
izens in a common loyalty.
“The defense of America begins
in the hearts of our contrymen. In
this hour of emergency, let us set
aside time to build our unity from
within, to renew our faith in bro
therhood, to quicken our national
life, and to reinvigorate our pa
triotism with a renewal of that
vision of democracy without which
we perish as a people.”
