The U.S. Must Act NOW

By the time this appears in print, President Roosevelt
will have delivered his once-delayed fireside chat to the na
tion, and undoubtedly he will repeat what has already been
said by all his Cabinet. But if it is only words that he offers
America, the lethargy will remain. All the words have been
said. They have all been said many times. It is now up to
the people of the United States. If from France they learned
no lesson, if they follow the paths of greed, a “let George do
it” attitude and a “business as usual” complacency, then it
is a pretty good bet that the Washington of 1943 will look
like the Paris of 1941. 1
If that happens, then indeed
Hitler's boast that his regime “will
live a thousand years” will become
reality. A halting, faltering Amer
ica stands now at its moment of
decision. If we are not dismayed
by the prospect that our children
and our children's children ar.d all
the generations to follow will live
under a Hitler regime—if that
dismay doesn’t end our indecision
and turn us into the highway of
action —then the Constitution and
the Bill of Rights will become dead
things and liberty and freedom
will be at an end for the whole
world.
Does that sound like exaggera
tion?
A responsible member of the
Foreign Service of the United
States, a man close to the Secre
tary of State and the President,
told this writer last week: “It is
impossible to paint the picture too
black. The United States is in a
desperate position:”
There are those in the Govern
ment who have seen this coming
for a long time, but there are oth
ers who have been blind and still
are blind. We have followed a pol
icy of allowing the Nazi and Fas
cist termites, disguised under the
names of consuls and naval, mili
tary and diplomatic attaches, to

lationists in Washington to press
for “trade collaboration” with
Germany after England is defeat
ed.

Nazi and Italian consuls who are

destruction, and who are working
for this destruction night and day.
Time after time the admittedly
. illegal actions of the German and

But most of the diplomatic mis
j demeanors were quietly overlook

consuls were booted out of the
United States, Germany and Italy
would take retaliatory action.
So the consuls stayed, shoved
out huge sums of money, threat
ened German-Americans and Ital
ian-Americans. set up in every
large city espionage and propa
ganda machines the efficiency of
which is reflected on Capitol Hill.
The Government never screwed
up its courage to the point of
freezing the funds of the Axis
powers in the United States
funds which were spent lavishly to
further America’s isolationist and
defeatist viewpoint. For Germany
and Italy realized that the war
was being won or lost right here j
in America and no expense was !
too great if America could be pre- •
vented from rendering effective
aid to England.
Now there is talk of freezing
these funds, but it will be a case
of closing the barn door after the j
horse is gone. The millions were
withdrawn from the banks, and
converted into cash. Long term in
vestments were placed under the
name of Switzerland and Sweden.
As a result, there will never
come a time when the United
States can fully throttle the ex
penditures in this country for to
talitarian propaganda. It is too

wholesale, under Congressional

hamlet. This has been going on
for two years. It has not stopped
yet.
When the Government’s spine
becomes strong enough to put an
end to these abuses, there will be
some hope of preventing Goebbels’
boast that America “will be an in
side job.”
