(5) Jewish law decrees that if
a man dies without children his

biblical law and refused to recog

themselves “Karaites” (derived

THE SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY
LETTER BOX
Florida Rabbinical Association
Orlando, Fla.
May 27, 1941
Mr. Isadore Moscovitz, Editor
Southern Jewish Weekly
Jacksonville, Fla.
Dear Mr. Moscovitz:
It was my pleasure to attend
the recent conference of AZA
chapters from Jacksonville, St. Pe
tersburg, Orlando and Tampa held
at our Congregation Ohev Shalom.
Over one hundred and fifty boys
and girls from Jewish homes in
Central Florida attended this all
day and evening meeting. Our
Jewish community was proud and
happy to note the splendid deport
ment, refinement and fine train
ing exhibited by these young peo
ple. Their actions in public places
as well as their decorum in private
homes and at our Temple indicat
ed that Jewish parents need not be
in any way ashamed of their sons
and daughters.
Realizing the criticism many of
our adult Jews get at various
times, it is a distinct gratification
to have the members of the AZA
and their young lady friends set
so high a standard.
The Orlando Jewish community
was proud to be their hosts and we
trust that our efforts to entertain
them made as nice an impression
on the young people as did their
actions on everyone in this “City
Beautiful.”
Cordially yours,
Rabbi Morris A. Skop, Secretary

Dr. Augusto d’Esaguy (center), Chairman of the Refugee Aid Committee in
Portugal, who is now on a visit to this country, discusses, the situation in that
emigration center with Joseph C. Hyman, Executive Vice Chairman ol the
Joint Distribution Committee (left) and Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, Vice
Chairman of the European Executive Council (right), at J.D.C. headquarters
in New York. Dr. d’Esaguy’s committee is cooperating with the JJJ.L. in the
care of thousands of refugees who pass through Lisbon on their way overseas.
With funds supplied by the J.D.C. it feeds 1,500 emigrants daily, provides
shelter, medical aid and emigration assistance. “The stricken Jews of burope,
Dr. d’Esaguy reported, “look to the J.D.C. as the representative of American
Jewish humanitarianism for their salvation.”
