gIVIAT STILL SUPREME . . .
Thirty years is a long time in
the sports world but it is an ev
en longer period of time for a rec
ord to stand especially a track rec
ord. But the twin killing made
by Abel Kiviat thirty years ago
todav still stands as one of the
most remarkable feats in the an
nals of American athletics.
Abel Kiviat was running for the
old-time Irish-American Athletic
Club. For then, as today, there
was no Jewish sports organiza
tion a lad could tie up with and
under whose colors one could par
ticipate. Os course, the Maccabi
tried to be just such a thing but
that’s a horse of another color and
another story altogether. Suffice
it to say that a Jewish athlete
thirty years ago had to sport the
colors of any organization that ac
cepted him for what he could do.
The Irish-American A. C. was
such a club, and more than that,
it was THE athletic power in the
country. Kiviat was only one of
many synthetic Hibernians whose
ancestry could be traced to Abra
ham. Other great track dhamp-

But Kiviat was the most color
ful of the lot and by far the most
widely known Jewish runner of
his day. The mile was his forte,
although he ran spanking quarter
mile legs on winning the Irish relay
country champion at six miles in
1913. Until the simultaneous de
velopment. of . Glen Cunningham,
Bill Brothron and Gene Venzke,
the central figures in recent
“Miles of the Century,” Kiviat
was one of the three men involv
ed in the most interesting rivalry
among American milers. John
Paul Jones of Cornell and Norman
Taber of Brown were the others
and Kiviat, winning the national
mile in 1911, 1912 and 1914, more
than held his own with the col
lege men. The indoor champion
ship meets were private parties
for Kiviat, who won both the 600
and the 1,000-yard titles in 1911
and 1913 (the games were not
held in 1912) and also led the
field in the longer race in 1914.
His feat of winning both events
on the same night in 1913 has
never been duplicated since. As
a matter of fact, the annual blurbs
released by the Amateur Athletic
Union to boost the box office pres
tige of a new sprinter inevitably
carries with it the legend that so
and so will attempt to take a
crack at Kiviat’s old record. This
year the blurb concerned Charlie
Beetham, the current white-haired
boy among the sprinting lads . . .

THE SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY
A Message To
Non-Jews
(Continued from Page Two)
I beg you to imagine yourselves
in the position of the Jews today.
There are fifteen million Jews in
the world. Six and a half million
of them are in North America
and the British Empire, and the
other eight and a half million are
in the most desperate circumstan
ces. The evil genius of Hitler
degrades them even below the rank
of the other victims whom he has
degraded, and the humiliated try
to find some sop for pride in the
power he gives them to humiliate
Jews in their turn. They are
hungry, and they are cold, and
they are homeless, and they are
desperate. I ask you to consider
that you too may be hungry, and
cold, and homeless, and desperate.
I ask you to consider it because
my own imagination can encom
pass that possibility for myself.
Now it seems as though money,
social position, all these things in
trust would always save us. But
if there is anything we have
learned, it is that only the sym
pathy of others will save us if
the worst comes to the worst.
And so we better lay up an enor
mous trust fund of sympathy that
we have given to others, in the
hope that if necessary we may be
able to draw a little interest on
it for ourselves.
a double such as this since Abel
Kiviat set track history with twin
victories in 1911 and 1913. Many
of the top notchers have tried
since then but no one has suc
ceeded in accomplishing the feat
of the Jewish star, when he beat
Ted Meredith, Long Tom Halpin,
Mel Sheppard, Dave Caldwell,
Harry Gissing and the other
greats of that era."
The old-timers will run the
names just mentioned trippingly
over their tongues. For these men
were the cream and aristocracy
of American track and fielu and
they were run into the ground
by a Jewish youngster who was
posing as an Irishman simply be
cause no other organization would
let him run.
An Olympic championship was
the one important objective which
eluded Abel Kiviat. A recapitu
lation of his records will reveal
him at once as one of traekdom’s
truly great immortals:
The one-mile championship —
1911, 1912, 1914.
The six-mile national cross
country championship—l9l3.
1000-yard national champion —
1911, 1913, 1914.
