It can happen to Hitler. But sere we doing anything to make it happen to Hitler? Along K-omes Passover and all of us get that grand feeling that liistory will take care of everything. We talk glibly of the victory that will come today because God handed it to us fen a platter many centuries ago. We talk of the modern tyrants being swallowed up in the sea because a miracle de stroyed the cohorts of Pharaoh in the Red Sea. Some of fes are taking the parallel of the Passover story a bit too literally. The trouble with most of us is that we’re sitting a lound twiddling our thumbs and daring God to stage an ■other miracle. We seem to forget that miracles are not ■the accidents of the supernatural but actually represent the ■physical and spiritual sacrifice. Most of us miss the real significance of the holiday of Passover. Some of us are lather childish and romantic in our approach to it. We sere struck by the color and trimmings—by the matzoth and Ithe four cups and the four questions and the hidden matzoh ■that is much fun on the Passover. Those of us who read the Haggadah with some under standing too often regard it as an ancient fairy tale with little relation to the fate of either the Jewish people or the [world at large. Yet Passover contains within it the most ■poignant record of the trials of a people—trials which have Iheir counterpart today not only in the tragic state of the ■Jews but of the entire world. The Jewish holidays have ■never been paraochial or narrow in their implications. It is Ino mere accident that Passover is so vividly suggestive in ■miniature form of the disaster that has enslaved so many ■millions of people throughout the world. Pharaoh or Hitler ■is the taskmaster of large numbers of human beings who ■are his slaves, toiling under his brutal overseers to produce Ithe weapons for the enslavement of still other peoples not bet caught in his clutches. It is the universal story of ■good and evil, but this time not merely the soul or heart of Individual men or women but the whole world is the battle field for that titantic struggle. It is a simple matter to point to the parallel between lour fate under Pharaoh and the fate of the conquered peo ples under Hitler. It gives one a lift to contemplate the pniracle of the Red Sea and to pray for a similar miracle Ithat will free the whole world from the lash of the tyrant. But what are we doing about it as men and as Jews to piake ourselves worthy of the repetition of that miracle in pur own day? When are we going to wake up and recog pize that complacency and faith are not the same thing? K)ne is built on vanity. The other on the solid ground of pill and strength. It may be sad to witness the smugness with which a preat many Americans are going about their war respon sibilities. But smugness on the part of the Jew is an un forgivable crime not only against himself but against his people throughout the world. How many times must we repeat the warning that where freedom of non-Jews is at Make the very life of the Jews hangs in the balance? Some one has said that this year the four cups should be drunk pn honor of President Roosevelt’s four freedoms. That is certainly appropriate. But may I break a rule of the ritual and urge a fifth CU P* Yes, a fifth cup to be drunk to a fifth freedom —free- dom from complacency. Let’s make up our minds when danger threatens that it’s not only the other fellow who is £oing to suffer. Indifference, apathy, overconfidence and complacency can be more deadly than all of the ten plagues rolled into one. What are we going to do about it? Well, if the spirit y Passover is to be our guide, we must forget our day dreams about miracles and adopt a bit of the realistic action of Moses. Remember that it was Moses who slew the cruel overseer. Moses not only personified leadership; he Save a splendid example of resistance and courage. _We nee d the courage to fight off bewilderment and uncertainty. *SK TOUR LOCAL Obtainable Everywhere In Florida A KOSHER ZION } • SAUSAGE CO. First-born animals were the victims—but far back in hoary legend, maybe even the first-born humans were in cluded too. The same fellows tell us that when the Israelitism religion changed its emphasis from the an imal to the agricultural, uleavened bread (or matzoh) was added as a symbol of the offering of the first fruits of the field. The stories which our fathers told us might be less scientific but they were also less gory and more romantic. More sensible in the first-born tradition is that requiring the old est son of the family to fast on the day before Passover, in com memoration of the deliverance of the first-born of Israel when the sons of the Egyptians felt the wrath of the Lord. Did you know that: Tradition requires you to exam ine carefully every pocket in every suit of clothes you own in order to eliminate crumbs of bread or cake ? And that tradition also demands that you must take every book in the house, shake it carefully, thumb through the pages to catch the crumbs you left the last time you were eating that piece of cake while you were leisurely reading? Wonder what the fel low does who has one of those huge libraries? The original Paschal celebration involved smearing of doorposts and lintels of the house with blood to keep the inhabitants immune from harm; but since in the early days houses were largely tents, the same effect was achieved by smearing a tent-rope ? “SCIENCE” EXPLAINS According to tradition, Pass over celebrates the passing over of the Angel of Death over the hab itations of the Israelites. But the “higher criticism” archaeologists, insist that Passover was origin ally a festival to a moon-god. The unleavened bread is suppos ed to remind Jews of the haste with which their forefathers es caped from Egypt. But the boys who-see-the-dark-side-of-things de clare that this was a primitive custom, whose original meaning is lost. The bitter herbs tasted on Pass over remind celebrants that the ancient Israelites led a bitter life in slaving for the Pharaohs. But one “authority” points out that in the Greek festival of All Souls, when spirits are supposed to roam about, herbs are also eaten “as a preventative against demonic in- , fluence and to keep the demons from entering the mouth.” An other fellow has the idea that the herbs were a purgative, meant to prevent the mixture of sacred food with profane. The whole lamb bone is a tradi tional table piece for the seder. But blow me down if that too doesn’t have a hidden meaning. They say this too was a super stitious device intended to keep the bones of the celebrants un broken and unharmed from feast to feast. Ralph Burton, chief council to the Faddis House Military Affairs Subcommittee. The history ot Mr. Burton’s associations and activities makes him no less “undesirable” than Mr. George Deatherage, who was remctved from his job by Secretary of the Navy Knox be cause of his record. Charles E. Coughlin is one of America’s most vicious anti-Semites. Mr. Burton was formerly his counsel. The National Union for Social Justice was the instrument of Mr. Coughlin’s venomous activity. Mr. Burton was its counsel. If it be claimed that Mr. Burton was unaware of the nature of his client, let it be remembered that the legal servant of the House of Representatives hailed Coughlin as “a brilliant man.” Anti-Semitism is as obvious a token of un-American ism as the House of Representatives could want.
