THE ZIONIST FRONT: David
Ben-Gurion, who after a prolong
ed stay in the United States, re
cently returned to Palestine by
plane, may return to New York
sooner than many expect . . . -
We hear the Zionist leaders are
making an effort to secure Wen
dell 1 L. Willkie as one of the prin
cipal guest-speakers at the forth
coming ZOA Convention in New
York ... - It is expected that
Willkie, who conferred in Pales
tine with Jewish and Arab lead
ers, will be back in the United
States before the ZOA convention
opens ... - There is quite a dis
agreement between the Hadassah
and the members of the American
Emergency Committee for Zionist
Affairs concerning Dr. Magnes of
the Hebrew University ... - The
latter group wants the entire
Zionist movement in America to
condemn Dr. Magnes for the for
mation of his new political party
in Palestine ... - Hadassah ar
gues that American Zionists can
not condemn Magnes’ action as
long as the Jewish Agency in Pal
estine has not done so ... - We
! learn that Berl Kat/.nelson has re
signed from his post as editor of
the newspaper “Davar” in Pales
tine because he thinks the new
pro-Soviet policy of this principal
organ of the Histadruth is exag
gerated ... - The first step to
ward a merger between the Zion
ist Organization of America and
the Hadassah will soon be made
by merging the New Palestine,
ZOA monthly, with the Hadassah
News Letter, the monthly maga
zine of the Hadassah ... - For
the first time in history, the all-
Jewish city of Tel Aviv, will
shortly have an Arab magistrate.
. - He is Abu Gaoud Jaffa who
speaks Hebrew as fluently as any
Jew in Palestine . . . -
PARIS ECHOES: Believe it or
not, but Pierre Laval who is now
delivering the Jews from France
to Hitler had two Jewish secre
taries until two years ago . . .-
His private secretary, Stora, who
was his right-hand man for years,
Was one of them ... - The sec
ond was his legal secretary, Mau
rice Blum ... - Stora was dis
missed by Laval in August, 1940
with the explanation that be
cause of his close relations with
Germany he could no longer em
ploy a Jew as his secretary
Blum did not wait for a dismassal
and left France for Brazil as
soon as he realized that his “boss”
Laval was coming to power . . .-
Suggestions have been sent to
Washington that in view of the
cruel presecutions of Jews in un
occupied France, the troop trans
ports going from America to
England should on their return
trip be loaded with Jewish refu
gees from Nazi-dominated Europe,
instead of coming home empty.
... - This proposal, however, has
hardly any chance of considera
tion ... - Church leaders in
America, horrified by the brutal
treatment of Jews in France, have
approached the State Department
with an appeal to permit the
transportation of Jews from un- i
occupied France to the Virgin
Islands for a temporary stay
there ... - The idea is to secure
for them permanent asylum in
British Jamacia . . . -

MORE SKY FOR THE R.A.F.:
Flight Sergeant Michael Stein Ja
cobs, who left his home in Balti
more, Md., last year to fly with
the R. A. F., wrote home to his
wife the other day. Touching on
the subject of the R. A. F.’s mass
raid on Cologne during May, lie
told Mrs. Jacobs that plane fol
lowed plane so closely it was all
the chief pilot could do to keep
them from bumping into each 1
other.
Mrs. Jacobs had deleted the j
more personal paragraphs o f
Mike’s letter, but here’s what he j
had to say about the Cologne l
raid:
“Over the target we weren’t
worried about the defenses so
much as bumping into other air
craft. Everywhere you looked
there were planes. It seemed like
one big formation.
“This was the conversation over
the ‘intercom’ (the plane’s inter
communication system), especial
ly from the rear gunner: ‘Hello,
Captain, two Wellingtons on the
starboard, one Halifax just above,
and I think there’s a Sterling
right behind. ’” The sarge goes
on to say that on the way back
British flyers commented on the
number of their own planes which
they had seen, and a certain rear
gunner remarked, facetiously:
“Yeah, I saw a traffic cop just
as we crossed t.ie Dutch coast
and he was waving and shouting,
‘This way.’ ”
If the United Nations keep this
up, something will have to be
done about getting the R. A. F.
more sky.

ON THE DRAMA FRONT:
Irving Berlin’s smash hit ‘lms
Is The Army,” which sold so
many seats in New York toward
the end of its ruri that, the cry of
1 “No seats!” could be heard for
blocks around the Broadway the
atre, included in its cast a num
ber of Jewish boys now wearing
Uncle Sam’s uniform.
Directed by Staff Sergeant Ez
ra Stone and starring Private
Julie Oshins, the, show introduced
to Broadway such talented sing
ers as Private Willie Horne, daiTc
ers such as Private Hyman Horo
witz and enough Levys, Kahns,
Siegals and Feldmans to start a
small show of their own. The
program abounds, of course, with
the names of Kellya and Joneses,
Whitleys and Oxfords, but they
■ are not alone. On the Broadway
stage as well as in the theater of
war itself, Jewish servicemen are
playing a full part.
Private Willie Horne, as it hap
pens, is something of a Jewish
Welfare Board discovery. It was
at the Jewish Welfare Board’s
25th Anniversary Broadcast, dur
ing April of this year, in which
