And Millions Shall Die
The Position of the Jews in Europe Today
BY RICHARD LICHTHEIM
This article was written by Richard Lwchtiecm. gener
ally regarded as the foremost Jewish jonmalist in Eu
rope today, at the request of the Indepe&de&f Jewish Press
Service for a "review of the position of the Jews in Europe
from his vantage point in Geneva where he has beer, from
the time that Hitler came to pewer to this very nccitri
Mr. Lichthe.m who has been in contact with virtually
community in Europe in his capacity as Geneva represen
tative of the Jewish Agency, here provides a uniquely in
formed picture of the Jewish status —on a factual and on
the psychological level. Thu is the first of a series of
these articles
PART I
Gown:
A letter has reached me from
the Ur.:ted States, asking se “to
review the position of the Jews
in Europe ” This I cannot do,
because the Jews of Europe are
today no more in a “position”
than the waters of a rapid rush
ing down into some canyon or the
dust of the desert lifted by a tor
t- jt/v, and blown in all directions.
I cannot even tell vmi how
many Jews there are at present
in this or that town, in this or
that country, because at the very
moment of writing thousands of
them are fleeing hither and thith
er, from Belgium ar.d Holland,
to France 'hoping to escape to
Switzerland.!, from Germany—be
cause deportation to Poland is im
minent —to France and Belgium,
where the same orders for depor
tation have just been issued.
Trapped mice running in circles.
They are fleeing from Slovakia
to Hungary, from Croatia to It
aly, hoping to escape police in
vestigation or to find peace and a
crust of bread in an Italian camp
for refugees.
At the same time thousands are
being shifted under Nazi super
vision from the Ghetto of Warsaw .
to forced-labor camps in the:
country further east, while other \
thousands just arrived from Ger
many or Austria are thrown into
the Ghettos of P.iga or Lublin.
With the exception of the dead,
whose “position” seems definitely
settled but does rot call for any
“reviewing,” the Jews of Europe
are not in any position whatso
ever. They are in the hands of
Hitler. These hands have been
doing many things to them:
Robbing them, beating them, and

So row you know.
, Do you ? I wonder .. .
Os course you do not want any
emotional stuff, you want facts
i ar.d figures. But what are facts ?
There are always facts behind
a fact, many of them: and it is
these facts which you must know
to grasp the atmosphere, to see
the background, to think the
thoughts and feel the feelings of
one man or woman or child con
nected with one single incident,
which is just part of the one little
fact, fifty thousand of which
form the fact which is a news
l paper item of 5 lines. \
I am bursting with facts, but I
* cannot tell them in ar. article of
a few thousand words. I would
have to write for years and years
and you would have to publish
ar. encyclopedia.
That means I really cannot tell
you what has happened ar.d is
happening to five million perse
cuted Jews in Hitler Europe. No
body will ever tell the story—a
story of five million personal
tragedies every one of which
would fill a volume.
A Single Incident
There once was an incident in
1938 which at that time “stirred
the world,” as people used to say.
Not only five lines but maybe
50 lines in the newspapers were
( devoted to that incident. In the
autumn of 1938 a young Polish
j Jew shot a Nazi official in Paris.
Everybody knows or dimly re
members—that this was followed
by a general pogrom in Germany.
It was the terror-and-hostage

TOOLS OF MERCY. To meet the acute shortage of surgical instru- ’

in .Asiatic Russia, the Joint Distribution Committee is shipping 250
doctors' bags, such as those shown above. Each bag is fully equip

the J. D. C. is also buying complete equipment. This is part of the

system already applied in peace
time. in appeasing time: several
hundred thousand German Jews
were punished for what one young
Polish Jew had c|one in Paris.
Instead of being “stirred,” the
world should have understood
what that meant, but the world
never understands. But stirred it
was and the papers told the story:
Synagogues burnt, Jewish shops
looted in every German town — 1
until the end of 193 S there were
still Jewish shops in Germany—
the Friedrichstrasse in Berlin
filled with merchandise which the
S. A. boys had thrown from Jew
ish shops and warehouses through
broken windows; a fine of one
billion marks imposed on the Jew
ish community; and practically all
male Jews, fifty thousand of
them, arrested and sent to con
centraton camps. This was the
.story and it told the “facts."
Some weeks later the papers were
able to report that most of the
fifty thousand Jews had been re
leased from the concentration
camps. So that was that and all
is well that ends well. But there J
were more facts behind these
facts, and they are the facts
which really matter because they
left a permanent mark on the
minds and bodies of fifty thous

Let me tell you some of these
