k • * AN INDEPENDENT WEEKLY SERVING AMERICAN CITIZENS OF JEWISH FAITH THE OLDEST AND MOST WIDELY CIRCULATED JEWISH PUBLIC ATION IN THIS TERRITORY VOL. 18 NO. 4. IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK BY MILTON BROWN, JTA JEWISH EXTERMINATION The Jews of North Africa this week were happy over their lib eration. But the question arose whether the liberation which came for them will not come too late for millions of Jews in other parts of the world. There came evidence, revealed by the Polish Goverament-in-Exile, for example, confirming the long suspected plan of a deliberate Nazi plot for the mass-extermination of the Jews. It was estimated last week by the Polish Government-in- Exile that in conformity with this plot, at least 1,000,000 Jews have already been put to death by the Nazis in Poland. Formerly, there were half a million Jews in War saw alone. Today, only some 40,000 Jews are left there. The cattle cars into which Jews are loaded, ostensibly for depor tation, are really not trains, says the Polish Government report, but execution chambers. A car which can hold 40 persons is filled with 150. When the trains ar rive at their destination, all but the strongest are dead and these are used by the Nazis for forced labor. So the report goes on in a har rowing tale of Murder, Inc., which has no match in history. All over Poland, the Nazis have es tablished “extermination camps” where Heinrich Himmler's min ions feast on death. These reports are confirmed this week by other sources besides the Poles. Dr. Stephen S. Wise said this week that a representative of President Roosevelt, recently re turned from a mission abroad, in formed him that “Die worst fears about the fate of the Jews under Hitler are true.” Dr. Wise esti mated that “one half of the five million Jews in the territories oc cupied by the Nazis have already been destroyed. Governor Lehman, who has just been named to the new post of Director of Relief and Rehabilita tion, for the populations liberated by the United Nations, in a state ment this week, predicted that the plight of the Jewish people after the war will be so desperate “that the survival of large numbers will hinge on the opportunity of ob taining healing arid home in Pal estine.” Indeed, there is occasion for apprehension that it may be even more desperate than that, for the mass extermination of Jews which is now taking place may not leave any Jews to go to Palestine. Let us hope that our fears will not be fulfilled. Hitler deported many Jews to the desert to build that Trans- Sahara railroad with which he hoped to help conquer the Middle East. The victory in North Af rica, from reports which came this week, is leading to thousands of these refugees fleeing these camps. Many are joining the new African army now being raised to fight for the Allies. There were numerous stories this week citing the valor of Jews in resisting the enemy. There was a Jewish girl in Stalingrad who took command of a Cossack regiment | when its commander fell in battle. In our own coun- JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA. Among a group of 1500 that crossed the Spanish frontier sev Ad Agency Fights Anti-Semitic Rumors New York (JPS) —Young & Rubicam, 1nc.,1 powerfu New York advertising agency, has launched a campaign of institutional advertising, in which “rumor-wardens” are called upon to fight anti-Semitic rumors which are part of the Nazi propaganda machine. In a full-page advertisement in the December Fortune magazine, Young & Rubicam lists “three cancerous campaigns” launched by the Nazis that are “making headway in this country.” One tries to set white American against black American.” An other tries to “set Christian American against Jewish Ameri ican” And the third aims to "set all Americans against the Eng lish.” "Hitler’s policy of demoraliza tion,” says the ad, “makes every group, every creed, every class suspicious of every other group, creed and class, always aims at engendering hatred of Jews. “Be particular alert to rumors that Jews are unwilling to fight, will do anything to avoid being drafted, or, once drafted, will take every means to get soft jobs, avoid combat duty. “Induction figures of Jews ac cepted and casualty lists of Jews killed in action continuously give the lie to these rumors, but they Darlan Still Practicing Anti-Jewish Laws In North Africa, French Deputy Charges LONDON (JTA) —The charge that Admiral Darlan who is now the head of the French forces in North Africa is still discriminating against Jews and refusing to accept somje of them for military service was made here by Pierre Bloch, Socialist member of the French Parliament who reached London to join General Charles de Gaulle. “Only Jews who are holders of Legion of Honor and war decora tions have been called up by Dar lan for military service in French Morocco and Algeria, while all other Jews are still treated by him in accordance with the anti- Jewish laws which prohibited Jews from serving in armed forces,” Mr. Bloch said. (A re port last week from Algiers stat ed that Jews in the classes of 1938 to 1942 have all been called up for service in North Africa. Nothing was said about Jews in other classes.) The former French deputy also reported that students at the Sor bonne University in Paris have eral days ago, there are many in possession of immigration visas issued to them by the U.
