Mgr- 0 ...........MM I •••••0 Heard In The Lobbies BY DAVID DEUTSCH 0 ........0 MORE MINUTES We hear that the Independent Jewish Press Service, which start led the natiort with its sensational : scoop on the inside of the Amer ican Council for Judaism, got hold of the minutes of a meeting held in Baltimore one day last week to . patch up the “peace” between the Zionist and anti-Zionist rabbis... Whispers have it that some kind 1 of a Darlan deal was made, with > the anti-Zionists protesting that they /meant no harm at all and ac- j cusing everybody else of miscon- j struing their motives .... For some strange reason, the Zionist members of the Central Confer ence of American Rabbis are far more anxious to preserve the ere- j ation of Isaac Mayer Wise than their anti-Zionist colleagues. That seems to be more import ant, even, than a clear-cut ex pression of American Jewry’s support of the most far-reaching objective in the Jewish National Home ... Oh yes! people who do business behind locked doors should remember that secret agents never record minutes of their confabs. These men were to have grad uated in June of 1943, but their course of study was accelerated so they could occupy pulpits to release men for Chaplaincy service, and themselves be eligible a year earlier for war service. These mem bers of this class returned from pulpits they occupy as replacement for Chaplains in the Army and Navy, for the graduation exercises. Reading from left to right they are: Top Row: Alvin I. Fine, Portland, Ore.; Julian F. Fleg, University City, Mo.; Robert L. Katz, Aurora, 111.; Bottom Row: Abraham Klausner, Denver. Colo.; Ber tram W. Korn, Philadelphia, Pa.; Joseph M. Strauss, Pontiac, Mich. ABOUT PAPERS There is talk of the Philadelphia Jewish Federation buying an in terest in that city’s Jewish Exponent, long-respected sheet, which has been buffeted about since the aged Felix Gerson sold the paper in return for an annuity for himself as long as he lives. Seems like Detroit’s example of financing the Jewish News has in spired the former Detroiter, Kurt Peiser v . . Somebody ought to whisper the facts of life to the omniscient editor of the New York Times who, in an editorial a few days ago, insisted and kept on repeating that Ilya Ehren bourg, famous Russian Jewish novelist and war correspondent, is a “she.” Ilya is about as stalwart a he-man as the Soviet Union boasts , . . The Times, which didn’t hesitate to express its dis pleasure a few years ago with a brilliant correspondent in Spain whose pro-democratic dispatches angered the Catholic Church here, doesn’t seem to mind it that its Middle Eastern correspondent, Joseph M. Levy, now in the U. S. A., is circulating widely with his anti-Zionist talk. Levy is said to be the godfather of Arthur Hays Sulzberger’s anti-Zionism. • • . A leading American Jewish weekly is scheduling the publica tion of an article by Dr. Joshua Bloch, head of the Semitics Divis ion of the New York Public Li brary, containing serious charges against the American Jewish Committee. “more ON SULZBERGER The once-shy Arthur Hays Sulz berger has made himself a j>erfect target for public comment since he buckled on his shield to do bat tle in the public arena ... Is it true that the N. Y. Times publish er, who recently returned from England on a Red Cross mission, “WE FEED THE MULTITUDES” is soon to return there for the purpose of telling the Colonial Office and the Foreign Office that American Jews want nothing to do with a Jewish Palestine? . . . Will he also suggest that the Foreign Office might make an ex cellent coup by arranging for some British Empire possession to invite a great number of Jews, in order to divert attention from Palestine . . . Wonder what the revered father of Arthur Hays thinks of his son these days? . . . The late Cyrus L. Sulzberger was an active Zionist and was once vice president of the American Federation of Zionists . . . The Jewish experts would suggest that it’s a case of the Talmudic charac terization, “Hometz ben Yayin,” (Vinegar, son of wine) ... In his letter to Dr. Samuel Mar goshes, Day editor, in which Ar thur Hays Sulzberger spoke elo quently of his father’s Jewishness, he conveniently failed to recall the fact that the man who tries so hard to hurt Zionism is the son of one who worked zealously to preserve it . . . And talking of anti-Zionists, isn’t it very strange that when the reaction aries get to work, they don’t know the difference between Zion ists and anti-Zionists?....Take, for example, that series of vicious at tacks by Westbrook Pegler on liberal David Dubinsky, who is called “unassimilated though nat uralized.” Dubinsky is one of those who thinks Zionism invites attacks on American Jews! He himself glories in his anti-Zion ism!
