It is understood that a strong fight was made to postpone the session of the representative as sembly until late in November but this was defeated. One group urged the postponement of the Conference on the ground that it was impossible to predict what might be said by delegates to the Conference and that this would be unwise for the Jewish people dur ing the period of the war. A decision was also made to permit Revisionist Zionists to come into the American Jewish Conference. Their entry has been blocked by several regular Zion ist leaders. It was further voted to exclude Communists from par ticipation in the American Jewish Conference. The decision was taken on an application for affil iation by the Jewish section of the International Workers’ Or der. It was stated that the In ternational Workers’ Order was a general rather than a Jewish body and therefore was not entitled to affiliation. The Executive Committee elect ed a Preasidium consisting of Henry Monsky, President of B’nai B’rith; Dr. Stephen S. Wise, President of the American Jewish Congress, and Joseph M. Pros kauer, President of the American Jewish Committee. Mr. Monsky had previously been serving as Acting Chairman of the Execu tive of the American Jewish Con ference. Cohen, who was a cutter in a tailor shop in the East End of London until three years ago, is now a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force. Last Saturday he was flying on a sea rescue mission with two mates, an Englishman and a Scotchman, when he no ticed that the gasoline in his plane was running low. Com pelled to make an emergency landing, he found himself on the island of Lampedusa. “In a moment I knew that I was in a bit of a fix,” he told correspondents. “Just then we saw some people waving white sheets, and two Italian officers approaching. One of the officers addressed us in Italian, and we discovered he wanted to surrend er the island. “In view of the accidental na ture of my mission, this was a bit of trouble. But I told him I would have to see the ‘No. 1’ man, and he took us to a high ranking naval officer. Other officers and civilians entered the room and I was just about to receive the of ficial surrender when —swish — everybody suddenly ran out of that room and left me alone. They • must have thought another air raid was just beginning, but there was no sound of gunfire or bomb explosions at the moment, and I thought the nerves of my hosts must be getting a little ragged. “But in, a few minutes I had a ‘worm’s eye view’ of what was happening. About twelve Light nings came over and hit the har bor. We fell flat. As soon as that was over I and my mates went out to our plane and began In a city wide election held on Monday night in the office of the Jewish Community Council electors from all of Jacksonville’s Jewish organizations named Abe Newman as the delegate to repre sent them at the . forthcoming American Jewish Conference which will be held in New York City in August. Just then four fighter bombers zoomed over at zero feet and we dropped in our tracks again. But they saw the markings on our wing and swerv ed away. ‘‘The next chapter was pattern bombing by the big boys. After that was over, our Tyrolean friend reappeared and told us to get away at once. We thought it a good idea, too, and the ‘Eyeties’ gave me a piece of paper signed by the commandant, guar anteeing the surrender and asking that we stop the bombardment. Those chaps were anxious that we deliver it to the proper author ities, and we promised that.” Sergeant Cohen and his mates then rushed off with the Italian note of surrender to Tunisia where they landed at an Ameri can base and gave the note to high military authorities who ordered the Allied landing on Lampedusa.
