In the accepted fashion, Westbrook bgler claims that some of his best friends are Jews. He fen goes on* to compare the labor practices against which [ complains with the ill effects that can be created by bar ing discrimination on grounds of race, religion or color, this plan seems to me to contain the germ of Hitler’s idea I proportionate employment.” He then proceeds with a latement that is only slightly more inaccurate than his lual observation by saying that “it will be recalled that ■tier said that there were just so many Jews in Germany Id decreed that the number of Jews practicing medicine Id law and studying in college should be in ratio.” Thus, ■tier whatever Pegler’s intention may have been in ling that argument—is shown to be a fair-minded citizen lio only wanted what was just and right for the Jews, loperly proportionate to the rest of the population. It lems curious that Pegler, who spends many days and teks on looking up the criminal record of some obscure tor racketeer, should be so unfamiliar with the record on Iws of the most notorious criminal of the centuries. “Worst of all,” says Pegler, in referring to the effort Ibar discrimination in war industries, “wouldn’t we es llish religion and race as the basis of eligibility for em iiyment and even for the professions and thus defeat the ■ry purpose for which all compulsory anti-discrimination ■vices are proposed?” There is only one basis in fact which Pegler has ig- Ired: that the purpose of the President’s Committee on Idr Employment Practice is NOT to stimulate the employ lent of Jews, Negroes, Italians or any other minority but I see to it that the fundamental principle of Americanism invoked: THAT NO QUESTION WHATEVER BE BRED AS TO RACE, RELIGION OR COLOR. The Field Marshal’s chief oppon ent was virulent anti-Semite, Dr. Daniel Malan. During the course of the elec tion campaign, the country was treated to an intensive anti- Semitic barrage. The Hereningde party, headed by Dr. Milan, based its program for Jews on these planks: repatriation of unwanted Jews; stoppage of all further Jewish immigration; no further naturalization of Jews; institution of occupational quotas. Charges that South African Jews are not “doing their part” were heard during the election campaign, despite the fact that there are some 10.000 South Af rican Jews, about 10% of the pop ulation, serving in the army. On The Record From time to time the newspapers (mostly Eng lish-Jewish) publish excerpts from brave speeches by Congressmen on Jewish issues. A Jewish war hero may be lauded; the fate of European Jewry may be deplored; the valor of the Palestine Jews may be ac claimed; or discrimination against the Jew in the United States may be criticized. The average reader receives the impression that Congress represents a valuable forum in which the virtues and the verities may be practised. It must be particularly heart warming to read the lengthy statements made by Congressmen of the Jewish faith on problems of vital interest to the Jewish people. But newspapers do the cause of truth no service by failing to point out that these statements and speeches are usually “for the record.” When the White Paper on Palestine is denounced or unfortunate visa practises by the United States State Department are condemned, it is never heard,by other Congress men, except at rarest intervals. There is a publication called The Congressional Record, which appears every day there is a session. Like some neatly-partitioned wastebasket, it contains the unspoken speeches of Congressmen, material they want to send to their con stituents to show how busy they are or to convince Republicans they are properly anti-New Deal or vice versa, etc. It is true that these insertions in The Congress ional Record serve some purpose. Newspapers can pick up the items if they so choose, since in parliamen tary parlance, the insertions are regarded as having been uttered on the 1 House floor. There is, however, an interesting difference between the House of Com gress and the House of Commons. Often during the' year extensive debates may be heard on topics that are of special concern to Jews. Some great speeches have been made in Commons, speeches that have stir red and taught the British community. It would be a noteworthy innovation if Congress would emulate the example. Perhaps, then, the country would lose its sad feeling that John Rankin speeks for the na tion.
