The National Jewish Welfare Board recently dispatched the executive
director of its Committee on Army and Navy Religious Activities,
Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, to the Pacific on a tour of combat zones
in that area to survey the religious needs of the thousands of Jew
ish servicemen there. He is shown here on his return, at a meeting
of the parents and other relatives of the men he visited, held this
week at Manhattan Center, New York City. Mothers, fathers, sisters,
brothers of Pacific servicemen crowd around Rabbi Bernstein, all
chanting the theme song of the evening, “Did you see my boy?”
Anti-Discrimination
Law Attacked By
Rep. Rankin
WASHINGTON, (JTA) Rep
resentative John E. Rankin, Mis
sissippi Democrat this week at
tacked Governor Dewey for sign
ing the Ives-Quinn bill barring
racial discrimination in employ
ment. The bill, he said, is “the
greatest betrayal of the white
Americans of New York that
state has ever known.”
Addressing the House pf Rep
resentatives, Rankin demanded
that “white Gentiles should be
protected from the persecutions
they are now compelled to en
dure.” He also called for defeat
of the bill for a permanent Fair
Employment Practices Commis
sion, on which a Senate sub
committee has been holding hear
ings.
The following day, Rep. Adam
C. Powell, Jr., of New York re
plied to Rankin, denouncing the
“few perverted Un-Americans’
who “distorted the facts” con
cerning the New York State
PEPC law.
“Fortunately the best thinking,
and therefore, the majority of
the white Gentiles of this coun
try,” Rep. Powell said “have con-

of whites only but for the rights
of all Americans. Only a limited

stead of melting pot, but they
have failed.”
