BOX 903 PHONE 9-4044 JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA Entered as Second-Class Matter, at the Post Office, Jacksonville, Florida, Under the Act of March 3, 1879 Member of THE JEWISH TELEGRAPHIC AGENCY Member of the Independent Jewish Press Service “The Oldest and Most Widely Circulated Jewish Publication in this Territory” * She Whom America Desires to Honor Mrs. Moses P. Epstein, president of Senior Hadassah, in a per sonal letter to her organization’s membership, has announced that to honor Henrietta Szold’s htemory a fund which will facilitate Zionist youth activities both here and in Palestine is being established. This is a well formulated plan to perpetuate the memory of that noble woman who was the founder of Hadassah and the mother of Youth Aliyah. The concerns of youth were always the concern of Miss Szold. She looked upon the solving of their problems not as a pet charity, but as the hope for future national Jewish existence. Her Youth Aliyah program was based not only upon the saving of the young people of Europe, but also upon their training for life upon the land of Eretz Yisrael. Her program for Palestinian children embraced not only hot school lunches and proper medical care, but also activities which were aimed at erasing juvenile delinquency in the Homeland. It is the latter work, now known as the Children’s Bureau, which has developed a well coordinated instrumentality for the planning and carrying out of an overall program for the well being of the children of Palestine which will be augumented by the Foundation. The Henrietta Szold Foundation will also provide fellowships for American young people to permit them to live in Palestine and later return to the United States equipped by their knowledge and understanding of Jewish accomplishments in Palestine to become leaders in American Jewish life. We heartily commend Hadassah for choosing this form of me morial to its noble founder. The Foundation which rests on a basis of Zionist education of our Jewish youth will serve as a double purpose. It serves a fitting memorial to a beloved leader and in making contributions American Jewry will become conscious of the need for this type of activity the recognition of which has been long in coming. Even as in life she was a pioneer for her people so in death the memory of Henrietta Szold will serve to develop new fields. The present leaders of Hadassah, who knew her so well, are aware that that is what Henrietta Szold would have desired. There is no doubt that American Jewry who has since the death of Miss Szold been seeking a suitable memorial in her name will respond generous ly. The A.J.C. at San Francisco It is difficult to understand why there has been so much jublia tion in some quarters over the actions of the American Jewish Committee at the San Francisco Conference. The fact that the Com mittee did not attempt to hamper the American Jewish Conference in its activities for Palestine has caused some to stand back and remark that the Committee leaders are becoming good boys in intra- Jewish relations and therefore should be commended. Last month an outsanding Rabbi and Zionist leader actually made that statement at a public gathering in Jacksonville. The Committee, he said, is gradually moving toward the Zionist viewpoint. As a good American we can think of only one answer to that line of reasoning. Nuts! By remaining outside of the American Jew ish Conference the Committee has refused to recognize the working of democracy in American Jewish life. By obstaining from counter acting Zionist activities at the Conference the Committee was mere ly remaining neutral. And we don’t like neutrals whether they ap pear in the World War H or in the Jew’s own struggle for national existence. _• A Harvest And A Spring We heartily congratulate the Jacksonville Jewish Center on its group of confirmands this Shevuoth. It is not that this w?s tne largest class the Center has yet confirmed (26) but that a seriou attempt was made to permit the graduates to depart from the day School with some knowledge of their Jewish heritage. The tact that a beginning has been made is indeed noteworthy. Let u good work go on. HThb package contain. a combination Sara 1 ste? SgrJs s- 1 rife! I Kb.
